It's amazing how precisely cut those chos are, and those are some beautiful handles.

once again, John.

N2S? did you ever figure out what that glaze on the blade of that khuk was?

Kismet,

I need your help. Which khukuri are you asking me about?

I could be mistaken, but it seems as though the one on the bottom is actually smiling for the photographer...:D   :p

Pen,
I sure smiled when I found that kukri and the one on top too.

Some of the weapons "scholars" are doing a serious study of where the crescent or "eyebrow" started. The Indians and Nepalese picked up the idea from blades trade over the Silk Roads of ancient times. One of the biggest "distribution points" was Tibet along with the early Portugese and Arabian nations having early sea trade routes to India. Theories range from Northern Africa to Italy to the Caucusses, but we do know the crescent in it's many formas was a sign of a well made blade. Copies were bound to appear so people thought they were getting higher quality than tey actually did.

I'm glad the calendars are liked. They make great screen savers.

John,

That's some of the prettiest handle wood that I've seen. What kind is it?

Bura said he could make a handle exactly like that if somebody would get him a permit to kill an elephant.

Kismet

It seems to be an optical illusion caused by the natural etching of some carbon steels. It creates a funny surface glimmer, sort of like a hologram. A very interesting effect. I have since found the same effect on a couple of older knives, but it doesn't seem to be very common.

 How bout some mastadon tusks, or pre-ban tusks that still float about.:D

Aardvark,
I am not sure since there is almost 200 years of patina on it and I don't want to go to bare wood to find out. Someone said they thought it was Rosewood.

No deal. Bura wants ivory or nothing and insists on killing the elephant himself.

It sounds like Bura needs to spend a few weeks at Disneyland. Visiting with Mickey by day, and relaxing the tensions away with some hobbies in the evening, can be very productive and fullfilling. :D

...and he could probably get close enough to Dumbo to take him without a fight, too! ;) :D
