Howdy forumites,

Just joined the forum to participate here...I am enthralled with these knives and after scouring all in the net these have proven to be the most highly respected out there.

I was at first drawn to the CAK because of the sheer durability but have been considering an M43 because of its all around appeal. I live in the Rockies and want an all around survival blade and I also am a martial artist and also desire my tool to be a weapon...

Anyone have advice or have on they want to part with?

M43 gets my vote. By definition, the M43 was an all around [survival tool & weapon] back in a time when lives depended on it.

You may have joined at a great time because as we speak, busy hands in Napal are working on some historically accurate M43's. I don't know how many will be produced and I know they are high on everyones list of "must haves" but, even if you don't get one, the dog fight that breaks out when/if they arrive will be worth watching!

The BAS is also high up on my personal list. I have very little experience with the Sirupate but many martial artists love them because they are light and lively in hand. The downside is they lack a bit of punch as heavy choppers.

My first, and still favorite, is an 18.5"/ 28oz WWII. Uncle always said it was the best balance of tool and weapon. But it's a beast, I wouldn't want to hike for miles on end with it. I always bring it car camping. If I was going to pack one afield it would be something in the 15"/ 20oz range. But I'm not a big guy, nor am I a hardcore outdoorsman. Cpl. has a 20" CAK that he carries with a baldric (I believe). That's probably the best way to carry the big boys. The M43 is very well regarded. You might also give the Gelbu Special, chitlangi and sirupati a look if the weapon aspect is important. Oh, and welcome.

Welcome bigmedicineshow!
You have two fine choices there.
The M-43 is usually 18" oal. If you are a larger person i suppose it could serve as a martial arts weapon.
We have a few forumites that practice bando, they seem to prefer the WWII model, other martial artists love the sirupate.
The CAK could serve as a weapon, but is most suited for chopping. I find that a 15" CAK could be useable, but due to weight concerns any larger a CAK would prove unweildy unless you are well fit.
Let us know your basic stature and what you specifically plan to use your khuk on and we will be able to advise a bit more. There are many helpful forumites here.

As a side note. Being a new member. You should read the BFc FAQ (Rules):

Thank you Karda, Silverfox, and Shortwinger,

When will the new M43s be available? As for size...I am 6'0 250 lbs...have average size hands I guess... the Khuk I aquire will be used for general camp chores, shelter building ect, perhaps elk quartering, and due to the CDC warning last week, Zombie defense. The WW2 model is very attractive as well...the M43 looks a bit fiercer though. When ordering one how long before delivery?

If you look at some of the recent posts about ordering you will see some problems in Nepal at the moment. This means that production has dramatically slowed down or even temporarily stopped.

The new M43's are just a theory right now, something the forum members have been asking for. It appears there is a plan to produce some of these historically correct models but, the situation in Nepal needs to improve before you should begin to hold your breath. Also, you will likely have a mob ahead of you in line for one of these if/when they appear. But as always, ask Yangdu (HI's owner) if she has any available. Things change each day the UPS truck shows up!

You're Welcome bigmedicineshow. At 6' 250 lbs you could probably get away with using an M-43 for weaponry. As for ordering..... Auntie Yangdu is swamped right now with pending pre paid orders and then pre paid special orders on top of that. Then theres the stock/production to consider. Due to circumstances beyond our control with the situation in nepal it is very difficult right now to produce khukuri (for all the makers) and then difficult for us to get them here to sell. One of our latest shipments was was turned back halfway to kathmandu due to the maoists closing areas and ordering everyone to stay inside.

Your best bet would be to wait for a DOTD here and fight the sharks to get it. Auntie usually ships promptly and you recieve your item in 3-4 days. If you make a pre-order now, my best guestimate would be.... you could be waiting a month or two for your order to be made and arrive here.

Thanks Karda,

That is some sad news about the Maoists...I guess Ill keep my eyes peeled here for anyone selling one or the Deals of the Day. Hoping to see one soon...a WW2 or a M43

FWIW/FYI - I've had a M43 on order since the begining of march I believe? The coal shortage in nepal was a problem [might still be?] then the Electricity shut off in nepal was an issue [might still be], and now stirre dup maoists again... so you can imagine what a difficul time Auntie is having. It's been very trying for her, and she is trying her level best. Long story short here, is we must all be patient - anything worth having is worth waiting for.

Well, my first, and favorite (made by the Master Kami -- formerly Royal Kami -- Bura), is my 20" CAK, named Ereshkigal:

She's one brutal lady. I've got big hands, and she's a handful. I've done some fighting practice with her (look up my thread "Kukri kata" in the Cantina), and while she's not one you'd swing around for hours, she'll either kill or remove whatever she contacts in one hit. She's a very interesting dichotomy. Her brutal size and weight make her a great wood chopper and splitter, but I've gotten her nice and sharp and she can cut through light vegetation with a flick of the wrist, or just raising her to shoulder height and letting her fall, guiding the blade through what I want to cut. As one forumite put it: "It's one big, curved scalpel".

I do indeed carry her in a custom bladric, and I do recommend this type of sheath for any of the larger kukri:

I also had an M43, which I sold:

The M43 is probably the best all-rounder. Not the best chopper, not the best fighter, but does each quite well, just not optimized for either task, which makes it a great place to start. It's pointier than the WWII, and the increased forward drop of the blade helps it punch above its weight. But there also, it's not one you'll swing in battle for hours. I'd suggest either an M43 or a 16.5" Chiruwa Ang Khola as your first, when they become available again (Yangdu may have some blades still in stock, you might want to call her or email her, tell her how you're built and what you want to do, she can give a good recommendation and tell you if one is in stock).

Remember kukri are measured in overall length, not blade length. For instance the 20" CAK above has about 15" of blade.

For a purely fighting kukri design, you might consider the Tamang (bottom in pic):

They are light, handy, a guy who's into Eskrima that I know loves them. They also make great machetes.

One other warning. You will often hear the term "the one". There really is a "The One" for each person out there. You will know it when you grab the handle, pull it from its sheath and it feels like it was always in your hand. Another of the same size of the same model will not feel the same as "The One". Some find it quickly (my 20" CAK was my first, and also my The One), some take years, some haven't found it yet. It may not be the one that you thought it would be. That's why when you ask which model is best for a given task, you'll get a dozen models listed, because each person found their The One, and it isn't the same as the next guy's.

Regardless, you will buy more.

Don't forget the HI knives and swords as well!!

Beautiful Baldric and Haversack Rig CPL. My eyes have been drawn to the M43 and the WW2 the more I have scoured the forum. My fingers are crossed that Auntie Yangdu has something for me in the next week or so. These knives look like they would have been at home back during the mountain man days...big, tough, and brutal...Jed Smith and Jim Bridger would have loved one of these back in the day.

I also really like the looks of the Amar Singh Thapa. I have one in full tang, which is a bit heavy for my tastes. Gonna probably get another one eventually. They're right; you can't get just one. Not as big of a fan of the WWII, but that's because I don't like the profile of the point. Still a great knife.

I actually joined BF because I wanted to participate in HI.

That's been tens of thousands of posts ago:o:D:thumbup:

Never did get an ASTK, but it's one that draws my eye. Especially that one that had the dhar handle that someone sharked out from under me. :D

Funny thing, after being endlessly pestered about HI on another forums and looking at their blades for almost 4 years, I joined BF specifically to ask some questions here on the HI forum.

I kinda remember sharking a dhar handled ASTK :)

My dhar handled CAK is 'The One' for me, perfect in every way :)

Contacted Auntie and lucked out to get one that is in the new shipment...cant wait to get ahold of one and experience what everyone has raved about...
