I was reading the interesting ABS thread. I was a member of the Society in the past and probably become a member again in the future but I got to thinking what organizations have helped me learn the most about knifemaking and bladesmithing.
The organization that has helped me the most was Bladeforums. Yep, right here in this very subforum. Many members have befriended me and opened their shops to me (Indian George and Dan Gray) Other members and former members have taught me about grinding and filing (Joe and Bill Vining), smithing (J. Nielson, Mace Vitale and Page aka sunshadow) and sheath making (Dan Gray).
Not only have I had this hands on help but equally important have been the metallurgical writings of Stacy Apelt, mete, Nathan the Machinist and Kevin Cashen. Their teachings have also spilled over into my real job of metal NDE and inspection. I have also had the chance to read the thoughts of other knifemakers that I admire, such as Don Hanson III, Tai Goo, Ed Caffrey as well as many others.
So when I had a little extra cash from my Christmas bonus I contributed to the organization that has helped me the most: I became a Knifemaker on Bladeforums. Bladeforums is also cheaper and takes my credit card online without a major fight
