For some reason I'm in a picture sharing mood today. Here's some photos I took at the Jones Beach Airshow on Memorial Day Weekend:

P-51 and F-22 Raptor (NICE!)

Thanks for sharing!! I haven't been to an air show since I was a little girl, my grandpa would take me.

Hey Beau,

Looks like you're pretty close to Batavia. Do they still have airshows there? I remember driving up the NYS Thruway to SUNY @ Buffalo one August back in the mid-90's when a stealth fighter shot straight west down the middle of the road. About a half hour later I reached Batavia to see clouds of WWII fighters in simulated dogfights. I pulled over to the side of the road to watch as B-17's came over in a simulated bombing run. Definitely the most spectacular aerial display I've ever seen.

Absolutely awsome. I have been to one airshow in Harare. Sent my God daughter (7 at the time) up in Pit Special flown by a family friend. Free was all I could afford, came with a prop turn and a cleaning bill.

The only time I have experienced a plane coming over on the road was just out side Lusaka when a Zambian Airforce (Chinese Y12) had motor failure and decided to land.
I still remember the Allouettes flying over Harare escourting a Spitfire, the roar of the Merlin engine with the thumping of rotors. Ducked out of the surgery to watch it once.

'78 we had the pleasure of having some Hunters and Canberras coming low-low over us on Lake Kariba.

I still want to see a Mustang in Flight. There is something magical with them.

The Mustang is pretty awesome, but here on Long Island, it's Grumman and Republic country, so we like our Hellcats and Thunderbolts better! Here's a few from the American Airpower Museum during last year's airshow (most of the planes were stationed at the museum and would fly out to the beach for the show).

And one of the last two airworthy Avro Lancasters (got to climb around in this one two). It's being used to film the remake of Dambusters!

The P47 has always been my Favorite warbird.

Sweeeeeet!

This particular baby is my favorite.........

......she was also the last aircraft I flew in before retiring from the Air Force.

Missed being around aircraft after I retired so I came back to California where I work on flight test F-16s at Edwards AFB. Plenty of sonic booms and with NASA Dryden sharing the place more than enough aircraft variety to keep these old bones happy. Watched a pair of Rapters go through the motions yesterday and then had a low level F-16 fly-by at 200 ft directly over our change-of-command ceremony. Looking forward to the F-35's arrival here in a couple of weeks........and our annual open house/air show in the fall.

Gents, thanks for those pix!

I surely do like looking at them.

American Airpower museum is awesome! Took my daughters there and we got the grand tour from a nice old gentleman, who told us all about how a bomber crew would work over Europe and in the end pulled some shrapnel from his pocket that they had taken out from his back and then told us he was a ball turret gunner. I was thoroughly impressed to say the least, the planes our great too.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

About an hours drive from me is this:

A great place to visit on the flying days.

On one occasion I got to see a P51 and a Spitfire in the air together. That was definitely something special.

Java, thank you for serving (and that great Dauntless pic). Back when I was a kid (it wasn't too long ago), the east end of Long Island was the Tomcat's playground. Now that the avaiation industry's dried up here, the skies are a little quieter. Except when the airpower museum's flying.

When I go fishing and it's nice out, sometimes that P-51 and an F-4U Corsair come out to play.

citizensoldier - next time check the airpower museum's website before you check it out. They usually have guest bombers and extra flights on "big" days (Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, Labor Day).

gajinoz: awesome. wish I could see some of those Cold War planes in person - British engieering always has its own "distinctive" look.

Nice pics! Must go to an air show soon.

My dad flew the Gloster Meteor.

I think 50's jet fighters generally are among the prettiest aircraft ever designed. The Sabre being one of my favourites.

Oh, and just have a look at this collection, Wintermute. It's about an hour from me :)

I saw this link and I wound up cursing you (unintentionally) before I even clicked on the link. Man I envy you. Never went to the website before - I didn't know that they had THAT MANY planes! And the ones they have, oh boy! I'd love to see an English Electric Lightning. How much of the display is operational?
Lol, I'm not sure if any of the aircraft on the list are currently airworthy. However they hold air shows there so you have the double joy of watching historic aircraft in the air and studying the static displays before and after the show.

I saw a Lightning once at a show and it was a sight! I don't know if any still fly now. It left the airfield using the trick of flying vertically until out of sight and sound!

Personally, I think the Spitfire is the prettiest plane ever built, bar none. I would kill to fly one.

I had the great good fortune to go to the Farnborough air show one year. Not only that but I got in on a trade only day and was able to get up close and personal to all sorts of interesting things.

I was also able to get to the Battle of Britain and Bomber Command museums. Something I will never forget.

A.W.U.K. - this is like kicking a man in the teeth when he's down.

Nice! Always loved the Vulcan - one of the one I have to see before I die. The Sea Vixen and Vampire, too.

Guess I have to bring out the big guns. Like I discussed before, this is 15 minutes from my house...

This is a half hour away:

And the biggie - this is an hour away, in NYC (after it docks again after repairs - note the A-12 and the cruise missile sub :) )

There is no nicer sound that those old piston engines kicking in. My favorite is the P-47. My father during WWII was stationed on Long Island at Republic Aviation. I was born there at Mitchell Field.
