The Joy of Cooking was my very first cookbook I got after I was truly on my own and had my own place. Still have it after probably 40 years. Still refer to it from time to time. I of course knew nothing about Beckers back then. It was just a practical cookbook for a guy.
 
I have several editions. Some "Joy of Cooking" and some "The Joy of Cooking".
I've always wondered why some added "the".
