Well, it looks like I will be taking my JS performance test with Mr. Bailey Bradshaw in January!:D I am going out to Dallas to visit my kids and take my oldest son to the AC/DC concert, so I will go out a day early and see if I can avoid embarrasing myself trying to cut the hanging manila rope:eek:

I haven't settled yet. Right now, I have one blade forged in 5160 and another in 1084 that has already been heat treated and just needs final grinding, etc.. As I am set up to work with shallow hardening steels like W2 and 10xx, I am hoping that I can get the results that I want out of the 1084 following Kevin Cashen's instructions. That would make my life a lot easier.:D

You of course realize before you go you must submit to the extraordinarily grueling ordeal of the obligatory and mandatory Bladeforums pre-assessment and peer-critique to all round accolades of great job, well done, good luck and knock em dead. In other words, we expect to see photos dude!

I think you won't have time for the concert so I'll do you a favor by taking one of those tickets. :D

Good luck not that you need it..... and before, during and after pics would be nice.

no sense in the other going to waste, might as well let me take both since you only wanted one........:p:p:p

Ha, ha.....the concert is the day after the test, so it will either be a grand celebration or something to take my mind off of my miserable failure:D

Joe I wish you good luck. My preference is for 5160, but that is just me. And yes we do want to see pictures. Find some rope and 2x4's and practice before you go.
Thumbs up

Ummmmmmm..........I think I'm going to be using 5160:eek: I may have a bigger problem, though. I don't really have a safe way to bend test. My vise is a cheapo Sears model whihc is totally inadequate and I really don't see being able to clamp the blade in the press and bend it.

There's a safety issue (at least to me) of bending a knife that's bolted horizontaly, if it snaps you're probably going to pitch forward onto the stubby remains of your blade.... course if it breaks you'd probably feel like stabbing yourself with the stubby remains so it'll all work out. :(

Good luck Joe

A bottle jack couple angel-irons and 2 little boards would work under a truck-frame for a temp-vice.

My bet is that if you asked at just about any welding/mechanic/fab-shop to use there vice, they would be very glade to see the test.

Do yourself a favor and make or borrow a couple of copper jaw liners, for whatever vice you decide to use. It will greatly improve your bend outcome...

Hey Steve, Now that's interesting. Is it really ok to bring your own vice jaw liners.

Take care, Craig

*for the actual test, I mean, or are you thinking practice

Straight out of the ABS JS testing rules......

"If the vise jaws are rough, smooth metal inserts shall be located on each side of the clamped portion of the blade to protect the blade, when bending the test knife."

I looked around my shop for something, and found some pieces of copper sheet....they were easy to bend to fit the vise jaws
. If a vise has serrated jaws, you can clamp a piece of mild steel in it tightly, and it will break when bent.....its the serrations that will actually cut into the steel.

I agree, horizontal might not be a good idea. I was thinking to find something you could do it vertically with. Like a fence or porch rail, dog house or out building or something. It should be totally doable. But it'd probably be better to do it in a vise and as close to the actual circumstances that will be used during the actual test.

You should always use them when practicing. Whoever you do your performance test with will probably have some. But, what if they don't??? I would bring them along just to be sure you cover all your bases. It is your responsibility to be prepared and help yourself out any way you can to make sure you pass the tests...

Good luck by the way!!!
