July Challenge Discussion and Sign Up thread

If friction fire gets too many takers or somebody else wants it I can go with knife handling.

Or put me down for trap and snare. Really I'd be down with anything E wants to teach me.

I wanna go and I need to get better at primitive fire making. All I got is my fire steel.

I too have no idea on how to start a fire with friction. I have seen it once at the last gathering and he made it look easy. Well it isn't and I would love to learn this skill. Just in case I leave the flint at the house. (Also, how would you start to look for actual flint rock?) Starting a fire with actual flint rock and steel would be another thing. Find the rock and then start a fire....

Id like to learn about Ethans thoughts on EDC and survival topics bugout bags ect. I think that would be great knowledge before the world ends this Dec ;)

We will have our contestants picked soon, so, all of ya'll that want in, better get your application post in this thread, soon.

Man, this sounds like an excellent contest. I would love to get in on this.

I don't think I will be able to participate the way that I would like to right now though with my current living situation and work load. I vote that this one happens again though :).

If I were participating, I think about the only thing that I could work on in this apt complex and in my off time would be trap making. Over the course of the last few months I've gotten much better at firestarting (I'm sitting at a 100% success rate for my last three firesteel ignited fires, most on the first strike), and become fairly decent at sharpening (not gotten to "tree topping" sharp yet, but I've gotten each and every knife I have to the point where I can shave forearm hair when I'm done with it). Shelter building takes land that I just don't have, and I think my biggest problem would be figuring out how to feed myself. So traps it would be.

I'll be interested to see how this one works out. Great idea moose/ethan/whoever, and I hope we see more like it coming up.

I would like to learn more about campfire cooking.
I find myself using the same ingrediants and spices. I'm kinda stuck in a rut. I need to change it up.
Also campfire cooking with different heat and coal set ups.
Slow cooking, smoking, etc.
Is certain wood better than others, etc.
Any info you would like to share with me would be apreciated. Thanks.

Very cool of you Ethan to take the time and effort to do this!

I was very interested in the land Nav/Tracking portion of the class Ethan gave. My weakest point in woodsmanship is Navigation. I am pretty dang good at dead-reckoning and using the sun, taking landmarks looking at them from BOTH directions (coming AND going) but I have no idea how to use a compass and map. I dont get lost in areas that I kinda know, but I wouldn't want to strike out across the New Jersey Pine Barrens on my own LOL

Most of this is because I have always lived in an area where it was either dead easy to get out of (Utah high desert and mountains) or in a rural area I know very very well (the Ozark farmlands) so I have never needed to use any real Nav skills.

To be honest, I dont even own any topo maps, just a road atlas. I own one small cheapo bracelet compass, just to roughly figure North.

So this thing die or what? It was originally stated sign ups would run for three days, but this has been up quite a bit longer and nothing has been updated about it. Was looking forward to seeing how this thing was actually going to go down.

I'm thinking the same thing.
