I am not usually one to let frustration get the best of me, but I must admit I just had a pretty mind numbing experience.
Let me fill you in, because I'd love some feedback here. The last three weeks I have been debating which (new) EDC knife to purchase. For the past 5 years, my EDC has been a Zero Tolerance 0350 (black). A wonderful S30V blade, but when sharpening... well, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome comes to mind.

Anyway, my decision came down to 2 Knives.

1. The newer ZT/Henderson 056X series (I prefer the 0561 brown).
2. The older but still sexy and beefy at the same time Benchmade 2750 Adamas Auto (Sand)

Naturally I bought both. I only own 1 knife, the ZT 0350 which after 5 years of moderate use, is barely scuffed up.

Purchasing the ZT 0561 was easy as pie. Amazon...picked a seller....badaboom ping kapow! DONE.

Purchasing the Benchmade 2750....not so much.

Several sellers were out of stock, or only had black or partially serrated.
And I noticed a couple sellers ONLY SOLD to Law Enforcement/Govnmt Personnel.

I ended up buying from OpticsPlanet, because they stated as long as my state laws allowed for the ownership of the Knife; I could purchase it.

So I buy it, and TWO DAYS later, I get an email stating I would have to show proof of Law Enforcement/Government status, OR I had to fill out and sign some ridiculously elaborate form, print it, hand sign it, then fax it over to them. Needless to say, I was a bit upset, mainly for the delay, but as well as the many steps required to purchase the knife.

To the elusive point of this post: Is this normal? I live in Georgia, and we don't HAVE knife laws, other than 5" + requires a CCW of sorts.
Now that I am beginning to get sucked into the beauty of handcrafted, lovingly sculptured steel; will I have to put up with this crazy fear-mongering often??

I'll say the same thing I wrote to Optics Planet: "It was easier to buy my AR-15, than to buy this knife".

I believe autos and "switchblades" still technically fall under federal law with regards to sending them through the mail. I may be incorrect, so someone jump in if I am. I would think that may be the reason. With Benchmade, if you send an auto to them for service, you have to send a photocopy of your credentials or they won't send the knife back. They will ship to a dealer, but not an individual. Spyderco is restricted as well. The federal law and or postal regs is my guess.

There are Federal laws against importing automatic knives or shipping them across state lines. You can buy the full manual Adamas anywhere you want, or look for a retailer or private seller in your state. (Or try a local gun show.)

Texas recently dropped restrictions on automatic knives so I decided I needed one in my collection. I couldn't find any online sellers in Texas but I found a person in my state selling in these forums.

Thank you so much for the hasty replies Vegas Blade and bdMicarta! I decided not to try and order an auto online after reading about the legality issues. I guess optics planet isn't really in the wrong then for requiring the forms. My state (Georgia) allows for the ownership and carry of auto's.
I called ahead to a few shops, and there will be vendors at the gun show I'm going to this weekend who will be able to sell me the 2750.

That really sucks that I won't be able to mail the auto in for repairs, but oh well, I probably won't beat on it too hard anyway.

Government Restriction
By adding to cart, I understand and agree to the Domestic Restricted Product Policy and certify that I will comply with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

I understand your frustration, however this is their printed disclaimer right next to the knife pretty much industry standard regarding liability for sales.

There are plenty of retailers who will ship autos even some that are supporters of this site.

I had a black manual 0275 and a "painted" tan one also, both NIB. Great, heavy-duty folders. I sold them to pay some bills. Wonderful folders with D2 blades. My favorite BenchMade.

Are you near Atlanta? There is an Army Navy store that carries them in auto, or used to. He has/had some of the best prices around too. Better than I was finding on the internet at the time I bought my Rift.

Moved to Feedback, the retailer the OP mentions isn't a member here.
The reasons why the retailer refused sale is at their discretion. Automatic knives of all kinds are legal in Arizona, but I cannot purchase one from some retailers. One that comes to mind is Knifecenter (they are a dealer member here). The problem is the laws where the item to be sold is located, not the destination. Some retailers would rather follow their perceived laws, rather than risk having to break several federal laws.

Wait until Blade rolls around in June. I'm not sure how long a drive it would be for you but you can find any auto you want probably.
