jungle boots or gore-tex backpackers

yeah texas isn't that much desert. i live 60 miles west of louisiana and about 100 miles from arkansas and oklahoma. if i go east then i get swamp and if i go north then i get mountains. the desert part is several hundred miles west.

Saylor, we might as well give up and quit hiding it. Hollywood has done an entirely accurate job of portraying our great state. We do, in fact, all ride horses to work and live in the desert surrounded by indians and tumbleweed.

Most military"issue" jungle boots are garbage. They were designed to torture us and make us meaner. LOL

Go over here and get yourself a pair of Airpower Jungles or the P6High.Gore tex/Corduras
The Jungle is being discontinued, I think. They had them on sale for $100 a while back.
Call them and see.
The P6 is basically the same boot without green.

I have a botanical garden in Costa Rica and take people on rain forest excursions.
These are " IT" for wet country footware.

we have it all, but the part of texas i live, is far from any dry or desert type of place. and remember a part of texas, like im talking about, is larger than many other states combined. we have up to date cars, and some of the best schools in the US, and not to many live like an old eastwood movie. sure we have the dry plains and desert types, but look all over the east and you will see a lot of trees and woods. just look up caddo lake images and you will find a swamp in texas and they are about 45 minutes away from here. 27,000 acres of swamp with alligators and everything. its the largest natural lake in the south.

I live in the Texas jungle! There is a chunk of land known as the Big Thicket in Southeast Texas. I live in the most southern part near Beaumont, Texas. This is where the Pineywoods and Gulf Coast meet. Very thick and very humid. There are lots of waterways in this area also. I wished I would have never got rid of my jungle boots when I got out of the service. Tomorrow is opening day of bow season and I will be wearing a pair of camo stalking shoes that look like Chuck Taylors. They are made out microfiber and dry fast. I have been looking at these.

A little south of Liverpool eh ?
Pretty territory and good red drum on the right trip.;)

Please Stop playing with matches guys. No one wants to stamp any soon to be forest fires out. Back to Jungle boots.

I have and love my Altama Jungle Boots. I've been using them for quite a while until I got some OTB Odhins. Primarily, the jungle boots were my all around swamp stomping, canoe tipping, everglades skipping boots. I still have them and love them, and if you keep your eyes out you can get them used (and broken in!) pretty cheap. They can run a little narrow so if you think you have wide feet, get the wide. They are made in America and can be trusted

BUT:

For Jeff's trip, I'll be trying out OTB's new Jungle boots. These are the lightest "tactical" boots I think I have ever seen. They are lighter than some of my sneakers. If I don't break them in by the trip though, I'll have to go back to the good old altimas.

i cant wear anything but plain ol leather combats. I have worn them for up to two weeks straight with no foot odor (new socks every three days). The leather breathes, unlike waterproof boots (gore and fabric). Have tried the jungle boots (canvas with rubber soles) couldn't do it, they flex too much for me. (Then and again I hiked in leather, rigid sole (birch platform) ice climbing boots for 15 years. everything seems floppy after wearing those, even mountaineering boots.

Their was an old gal that was told she passed gas all day and she didn't believe it.
She told her grandkidz ' I aint smelt a thang and I aint heard nuttin.
The kids took her to the doc for a checkup.
He gave her her 20 pills to take 2 a day for ten days.

On her return visit doc inquires " How are you ?"
She sais. " I ' feel fine but those pills make me fart like you cannot believe and it is so loud you cannot believe !. " What do we do ?"
Doc says. " Perfect ! " Your ears are clear now lets work on those sinuses ! "

I have a pair of OTB Abyss boots and love them. I use them all of time wet wading while fly fishing. I also wear them exclusively on backpacks when I'm expecting river crossings.

I'd be very interested in your thoughts or a review here after you've used them some.

I don't care for any Gore-Tex lined boots, unless I'm heading to some severe cold/wet weather environment. I would much rather have a sturdy, unlined pair of boots and a few pair of quality socks...unlined boots will dry faster and you can still wear them wet if you change out your socks.

I've used Jungle boots quite a bit and like them for what they are. I have a few pair of the older Wellco brand (made in the US) that has the cotton-duct construction. They dry much faster than the newer cordura constructed Jungle boots. Even if I'm going to be in and out of water with a pair of boots, I'll still pack a pair of sandals. You need to eventually get your feet dry and let them air out or you'll be in for a world of hurt.

I do agree, East Texas can be a very "jungle-like" environment. Not to mention there are plenty of river canyons that descend into very humid/tropical oasis-like areas. You could easily find yourself in a very hot/dry and rocky type desert terrain and in an hour you could hike down into a very humid, wet canyon. Texas is quite a diverse state...almost as much as my home state of WA.
