Junkyard II vs. the Lahar

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at getting a new folder and can't decide between the Lahar and the Junkyard Dog II. Which is a better choice for a heavy use edc? I really like the fact that they both have g10 over steel liners. Which is the better steel between the Sandvik and the VG-10? I'm really torn because though the Lahar appears to be a bit more stought (which I like), the JYDII has that extra 1/4" and reminds me of a folding Nessmuk.

Those of you who have or have handled both, which is your preferred and why?

Thanks guys.

One more thing, I read somewheres that the JYD can be a little temperamental when it comes to its lock, that it can sometimes not hold if accidentally bumped. Is this true?

I like the JYD and no I have never had a problem with the lock. I like the blade shape and the flipper design better on the JYD. My main knock on the Lahar is that the G10 is pretty rough on the paws. The G10 on the JYD is still very grippy but has a bigger check pattern.

I like both, but between the 2, I would choose the lahar for fit, finish and that wonderful VG10... one of my favorites. I'm also partial to a satin blade

I handled both the Lahar and the JYDII at Blade last year. Tim Galyean is one of my favorite makers and both knives are A+ in my book. I bought The Lahar though. That's just me. I like simple and tough. That's what I bought. Honestly though, I secretly want the JYDII as well, but my first instinct was to get the Lahar. I'm glad I did!!!

There's my $.02

and that's the final word, which do I get first?

ok, i will now attempt to give my detailed explanation of the two.

Lahar is a great work knife. It has the best steel in VG-10 and the best fit and finish. The edge is very thin, thus it is very VERY sharp. that edge will stay for a long while, but even when it is gone, you will still have a pretty sharp edge left for a LOOONNNG time. Excellent knife overall.

JYD2 is a great work knife also. Great steel in 13c26. Stays sharp for a good while, and keeps a nice working edge after the intitial sharpness is gone. Not as long as the Lahar, but still awhile. I personally use it for everything from working outside to food prep. I would use the Lahar, but I want to have one knife that is SUPER sharp all the time, mainly to scare friends into not being stoopid with my knives when I show them off, but mainly cause I'm picky. Overall, just a bit under the Lahar.

They honestly make a great work pair. I would say get both, but if you can only get one, the Lahar prolly could hold up to alot more abuse than the JYD2 just cause if the better steel. Either way, you wont go wrong with them both.

Final vote - - - - - - - - - - Lahar, but it was a close vote.

Yea, That's what I meant!

Thanks everyone! I think I'll get the Lahar now, and get the JYDII later. I don't really have need for both (sitting on several folders now), but I can't help myself!

They liners on the JYD are definitely thicker if that sort of thing means anything to you.

I believe the person who gifted it to me (how cool is that?) found it for $48.00. I can not recall the name of the website but it turned up in the first few hits of a google search. It really is a fantastic, bomb proof knife. I put a drop of thin oil on the pivot, holy heck does it open fast now.

I prefer the liner lock on the JYD II. For some reason, the Lahar felt cheap in my hand, and the liners seemed to be made out of a cheaper, lighter steel than the JYD II. I do like the ergos and VG-10 of the Lahar. If they made a Lahar in the USA, with the same liners as the JYD II, and CPM S30V, I'd take it in a second.

Would the thicker liners of the JYD give it greater strength than the Lahar?

a friend of mine is in maintenence(sp?) up at our college. He uses the Lahar everyday. The school is curently undergoing preperations to be remodeled. The knife gets abused and has taken alot of punishment. the lock has never failed him. It still locks up perfect and tight.

the Lahar is a very very well built knife.

read this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485312&highlight=Lahar that should answer alot of questions.

it wont fail you unless you do something REALLY stupid with it.

That answers everything! Lahar it is.

Well I own both and what can I say except I like them both. So before I give my answere please understand both knives get my endorsment which is worth very little. (LOL ) The favorite for me out of the two though is the Lahar because blade shape, blade material, grip shape, and I like having a thumb stud which the JYD 2 does not have. As far as fit and finish they both seem equaly fantastic to me. The one plaus the JYD2 has for me over the Lahar is it is made in the U.S.A which means nothing to some but a lot to me. I wish my JYD2 had the same thumb stud my Storm 2 has. Enjoy which ever knife you get.

OOOOoooooohhhhh! :thumbup::D Now your talking!

Kershaw are you listening? :)

Edit: I have to admit the ZT 200 is super nice and reminds me of the Lahar.

Brasman,

Thanks for the info! The U.S. make is important to me. That is why I stopped buying Buck. I ordered one that said "U.S. Made" in the catalog, and when I got it it turned out to be a China-made knife. I use to feel similar towards all Asian knives until I was given a laminate blade Japanese wood-working knife that was unbelievably sharp. Now I highly respect many Japanese knife makers.
I agree though, if the Lahar were American made with S30V I would like it better, though I probably couldn't afford it.
I want to thank all of you guys for your advice. The only local places that sell knives are the local feed-store (which only sells Case) and WallyMart, so I don't usually get to inspect knives before I buy them. Your opinions have really been helpful in my choice making.
