Junkyard II vs. the Lahar

I was faced with the same problem yesterday. I had both in hand and was examing each before I made up my mind and went for the JYDII. The good thing is that I couldn't screw up whichever way I had gone! Each knife had only one complaint for me and this is what I based the final decision on.

1. Lahar- I would have liked to have seen the same thickness liner's as the JYDII.

2. JYDII- I would have liked to have seen the same type of pocket clip as the Lahar.

Those were the ONLY complaints I had, and both are very small things.

As far as the lock on the JYDII goes, while I had the knife disassembled for polishing and relubing, I went ahead and gave the locking liner a bit of a tweak by giving it a tiny bit of additional bend. This is something I usually end up doing to a lot of knives I own. The result of this was a stiffer lock and a lock that sits flush to the left side of the blade tang. This is a VERY secure lock.

I also redid the pocket clip with my Dremel and then added some 3M Stair Tread tape to it as a finishing touch and to make withdrawing the knife from my pocket easier.

Well at Walmart the Kershaw Storm 2, Kershaw Blur, and Spyderco Native are all made in the U.S.A. and I have all three and they are great knives. There are probably some other models there as well but I have those three so I can tell you nfor sure where thery are made.

Thanks guys. I'll have to check my local Wally. Last time I checked they only had two smaller Kershaws, but maybe that has changed?
I'm thinking that I may go ahead and buy both......my brother has a birthday coming up so if I like one better than the other I can just give him the other. Gonna be hard to let either one go.

Well, after searching around I finally got my first Kershaw........the black Junkyard Dog II! I call it mine but actually it is going to be a gift for my brother. I think he is going to flip when it arrives for his birthday! Here's a couple pics of it before it gets wrapped. Front (sorry it's a little blurry), and Back.
Now to quickly put some more money together so I can get the Lahar that has my name on it!

That is truly brotherly love, man!!:D Getting a new Kershaw for your brother before getting one for yourself:eek: Did you fall and hit your head or something??? Ok, ok I admit you did the right thing. That was really nice of you...WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU?? Sometimes posts don't make any sense.:D

Heh Heh, well the thing is his birthday is coming up and I only had so much to spend on him, and I got this Junkyard Dog II brand new for ......................wait for it...............$29 + $5 shipping = $34 for a brand new Junkyard Dog II! That leaves a surplus of cash for me to put towards my Lahar!
So yes I may have a brained damage, but I thinking am clearly.

Where'd you get it so cheap?

A guy out of Florida had one for sale, and I bought it. The only reason I can figure that nobody else beat me to it was I was shopping during the Giants/Packers Game.
I have seen the small Junkyard for $20, but never the big II for under $40.

I have both but I really hate the pocket clip on the JYD 2. The Lahar has superior blade steel. I do not mind Japanese made knives so that really is not a deciding factor to me. The Lahar takes and keeps a better edge and to me has better fit and finish. Bottom line, the Lahar is carried on a regular basis and the JYD 2 is used only occasionally. My wish is a frame lock Lahar with a S30V blade that is made in the US.

Thanks JL,
My brother dislikes all pocket clips, so I figure he'll ditch the clip first thing. As far as the overall knife, I think he'll like it as he's currently carrying an old Schrade Cliphanger that has seen much better days (although he did have the blade reground by Steve Rick). I just couldn't pass on the good deal I got on the JYDII.
As for me, I really want to get the Lahar. I'm just waiting till I either put enough spare change after bills together, or I find another good buy. I may have waited too long. I've noticed that the Lahar is getting more expensive all the time.
