Jury duty blade?

That section of Norristown is not too bad. They have cleaned it up a bit. It was hard to get lawyers to have offices in the area if they were affraid to step outside. I would not be worried about the cops, just the sheariff's deputies at the doors.

I reccomend leaving them in your car. While most places would give them back when you're done, why take a chance. They don't use rent-a-cops at the courthouses here in NJ, but officers from the sherrif's dept. Until he retired a few weeks ago, a buddy of mine was the lieutenant in charge of the officers at the Morristown,NJ courthouse. He would tell the funniest stories of people who would forget what was in their pockets and just empty them in the tray. He said it was most common with those not going to court for themselves but to watch their friends in court. Items like bags of weed, cocaine, knives, switchblades, etc. would be tossed in with keys, wallets, etc. because they forgot. Of course they would have to then just arrest them for stupidity :)
Hey Craig, do they still have that place the Collegeville Inn with the all you can eat special there? Lifted at a few meets at Graterford Prison there in Collegeville and the best part was always going to the Inn afterwards :D

I also got called for jury-duty (for August), but to me, going anywhere without a knife is like going everywhere nude.:D.

(However, I DON'T think I'll be packin' my MONSTER Sifu THAT day, and since "public nudity" is a crime, maybe I'll just take my attack-cat "for protection" that day....).

I can see it now...

Picture Glockman putting his cat through the x-ray machine... hahaha!

Do you have a Concealed Cat Permit for that?

Anything that could be viewed as a weapon will be.

Think of it that way.

Never bring CIA letteropeners and the like to a courthouse. For a numner of reasons, imminent arrest opon its discovery being one of them.

I do have two UtiliKeys on order, but I'd be afraid to even pull one out and use it should the need arise.

The Collegeville Inn still exists, but it has a new set-up where you sit down at a nice table, but you get your own food in pseudo-cafeteria style. Don't know about all-you-can-eat, however.

Yep. When "weapon" is undefined, a sharpened pencil could be classified as such.

I'll simply show up un-bladed and do as I'm told when I'm told. Just like kindergarten.

For some reason in my area they are much stricter in the courthouses than they are in the airport in Atlanta. I get called every year and have seen SAK classic's held (at least I hope they were held for the owner).

Never had a problem with a not threatening sub 3 inch blade at the airport.

That's probably the one you would most likely get by with. I have passed through countless checkpoints. I just place my keys on the tray and it has always gone unnoticed. There have been some places that have asked me to remove my Spyderco Ladybug from my keys, but no one has noticed my Swiss-Tech.

I just completed serving jury duty on a one month case (involving two knives, incidentally: two defendants charged with kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon). Interesting case, but way too long; but that's another story. I served at the Santa Ana Municipal Courthouse in Orange County, CA, June 18-July 17. The entrances are staffed by OC sheriff's dept officers; bags are scanned by a machine a la airport, and you walk through a metal detector.

I usually carry a folder and Leatherman Wave on my person, but left them at home for jury duty. I forgot to remove my SAK Tinker and SOG CrossCut from my shoulder bag, however. I did not realize I had them till my third day of service, when one of the sheriffs at the security entrance noticed it on the X-ray. Two guards checked that neither were auto nor one-hand opening, then let me go on my way. I inquired, and they said that small non-locking blades and blades under 2" are fine.

So the Tinker and CrossCut stayed with me through the 4+ weeks of jury service. As always, YMMV --

My personal EDC (for just such occurances) is a ceramic bladed Boker Gamma (E-bay is a wonderful place). It is by no means a tough duty knife, but it's decently sharp, has a 2" blade (in case anyone ever DOES find it, it doesn't look 'mean'), and has such a small amount of metal on it that it's never set off a walkthrough detector (although I'd guess the hand-held wands would find it).

If you need to have a knife on you at all times because you might have to cut something, you may just be out of luck.

If you want something with which to defend yourself if the need arises, tuck a sharpened No. 2 pencil in your pocket (Be careful! You’ll poke yourself if you’re not careful!) or carry a nice, pointy steel pen. There you go! You’re armed with a deadly weapon and the guards don’t even realize it.

As a journalist, I have to enter the courthouse way too often for my tastes. I divest myself of everything I might have with me, but always have a couple nice, pointy steel pens with me.

In the courthouse, anyway, the pen IS mightier than the sword.

That is a pretty fascinating thing you have going by your signature.

I wouldn't advise trying to "sneak" a CIA letter opener type into the court. They may think your up to something if they do catch it. It may be illegal to do so.

Simply claim your goods with the court officer and they hold them aside in a locker for you.(call first to confirm your state does this.) Keep in mind it will most likely be fondeled by them while your gone. So, keep the high price stuff at home.

Hey Craig, if you want a blade, you may be SOL. However, if you want a protective weapon, consider the following:

MiniMaglite or 2AA LumiLite

Cane (an $11 Rubbermaid aluminum one ain't perfect, but better than nothing and totally healthcare-untactical looking!)

One pound hand weight, in a nice pink or purple (try saying you are rehabbing your injured arm, if not, they are only a dollar or two)

Carpenter's pencil, sharpened or not (twice as thick as a reg pencil, with squared ends--very sturdy)

Sturdy toothbrush case (have brush inside and small thing of paste)

Except for the cane, all these can be used in reinforced fist techniques, like a Kubotan. Better than nothing, and you can probably think up more ideas.

A hardback book is also better than nothing, and a dog collar attached to your keys makes a nice flail which you can unbuckle for greater reach if there is time.

Have fun! :)
