Just a couple of sticks

Slow night and decided to post to kick things a bit.

Last few week ends I was a bit bored and made up a couple of walking sticks. It was actually kind of fun. It started out in Feb when Becky collected this stave.

I de-barked it the same day and let it dry out near one of the furnace vents in the house for about 3 weeks and sort of forgot about it. Somewhere down the line I picked up another one and did the same thing. Whittled down the handle area to make room for a paracord wrap. Then applied a tinted varnish/poly coat for a bit of colour.

Bottom of them has an epoxied coin for protection. I found these chinese casino tokens in the basement, I think they were from the step mother. Anyhow, they fit the base nicely and will protect the wood. A cap would have been nicer, but I was in foraging mode to finish this. I took a lot of effort not to stick a beer cap on there and call it a day :)

Second one has some jute twine wrap on it for accents. Thought it might be removed for tinder if really necessary.

I was running out of paracord on the 2nd one - so it managed to get a little two tone, and perhaps not the prettiest wrap, but it is comfy in the hand. Remember - I was foraging. Also carved out a spot in the top and sunk in a little button compass. Kind of a handy thing to have on a walking stick.

Well - I didn't spend too much time on the workmanship or being too careful applying the varnish. However, I like them and Becky is happy with hers.

Fun little project that didn't cost anything as I simply raided materials already around the house. Gotta get a few more button compasses. They are handy to have.

I like them. Good job, and without spending a dime, except a moment of your time. (That was unintentional, seriously)

I remember that one Tulfuchre. You did a much prettier job on your finish than I did. I also remember that nice little copper cap you had. I was looking for something similar, but just could find one in the house. Bushman had a nice one too as I recall!

The polyurothane we had was tinted and the can I had was down to the 1/3 mark and came out more gloppy than it should be. I remember this little place in Hull Quebec which had these lumberjack type tables to them with an extra super thick varnish applied. They were sort of roughly hewn and that was the look I was going after.

Anyways they are fun to do.

I loved making walking sticks as a kid. Still to this day if I find a nice hickory branch in the woods, I can't resist making a walking stick from it.

Nice work.

Great looking sticks. I really like the coin idea, it provides some unique character.
Do you mind if I ask how you wrapped the Para cord? Is it tied on, glued, etc…

Nice simple sticks.

Question re the lanyard...What is the correct height for the grip/lanyard? Is it your natural hand position with the elbow at ~90 degress?

These grips are two fist lengths for some flexibility. I tend to like my hand raised a bit above the elbow, but sometimes it rests at 90o.

Paracord is simply wrapped for easy of access. A small amount of white glue secures the bottom tab and it can be torn off without too much effort. There are a few bumps in the two tone one where the cords are overlapping and the knotted ends protrudes. They can be felt but are not uncomfortable.

great stuff KGD... thosr came out real nice... i really like the coin on the bottom...:)
