Just a fun little project (Opinel)

a previous forced patina that "ate" in on the blade.

I really like your knife, thanks for the great photos.

How did you force the patina that ate in on the blade?

Left mustard on, but a bit too long. After that failure it became my experimenting opinel.

What did you use to shape the handle?

60, 120, 360, 600 and 800 grit sandpaper. That, and some patience;-). The lowet grits make quick work of it though.

Thanks guys!

how long exactly?
I ask because I would not want to repeat your mistake, and I do experiment with creating patinas. I have used hot vinegar sucessfully with no metal pitting.. applied with a Q tip and left to dry for under 5 minutes, then rinsed and oiled..

you can see my pemberton vinegar patina here

You sanded it by hand? Or with a dremel?

Thanks!

O

Well I've had ok results with 30minute cycles, rinsing, reapplying, repeat. That time I had ledt home and forgot about it, so it remained on the blade for 3 hours or more... My bad:-). I'll check your thread tomorrow on my pc, on phone now. Have seen nice and even results by others with vinegar though.

About the sanding, that was done by hand with sandpaper mostly. I took a bit of the butt off with a stone grinding wherl, just to try that out, but that quickly blackened the wood so I quickly went to sanding by hand.

Hope that answers your questions? Glad I could be of any help!

Thanks for the reply. I have been thinking of using my grinding wheel, glad you talked me out of it. Hand sanding it seems very tedious. May have to get the dremel out.

It really goes quicker than you think, by hand, if you use a coarse grit to start with. Not much need for power tools when modifying an Opinel.

Nicely done! I've rounded the butts and added EO notches on my Opinels as well... I like the walnut stain and brass tack on yours. The dark wood really sets off the brass.

That turned out perfect and is exactly how I have been envisioning doing the Opinel #7 that I bought a while back. Great job!

Indeed. With low grits, the wood flies off.

Have fun modding ;-)

Eh, I used the stone grinding wheel and a dremel simply because I don't have sandpaper at the moment. And the metal file on my Swisstool.

And I removed that pesky locking ferrule.

Will fine tune it later maybe!

Edit: found some 80 grit sandpaper and that really improved matters!

1. Awesome. I love that color and staining pattern.

2. Dude, your hands are WAY too clean to be holding a knife you just modded. Don't you know your hands are supposed to be dirty? Come on! Lol.

Seriously, good job though.
