Just a heads up about a new form of theft at gas stations

Here's something interesting. When I lived in Hawai'i and we went somewhere touristy, it was a good idea to take your keys and your valubles and leave your doors UNlocked. There was a huge ice (meth) epidemic there at the time and the tweakers had no problem smashing a car window if they encountered a locked door. All you had to do was look on the ground for broken window glass to find out if you were in one of these areas.

I grew up in a small town too, and it didn't take long to outgrow those small town bad habits.

....funny that, we drove as far as we could up to Kaena State Park, where the road stops there is a small car park area, it was covered in broken window glass...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up the same way, now when I go home, my sister and mother wonder why I carry a gun and lock my car all the time :)
In fact my mom hugs me like we are at a mafia meeting and when she feels my gun, she asks why I carry and I ask her what day it is, she says "Friday" and I say I always carry on Friday :)
If she said Tuesday I would say I always carry on Tuesday.

My non gun friends always ask why I carry and I usually say, "If I did not need to I wouldn't"

I only carry on days that end in "y".

i'm in a capital city and still leave my doors unlocked from time to time. just a bad habit and one that's going to stop. I have had several cars broken into before and some stuff stollen both times. it's unfortunate but it should not be treated as "if" but as "when" these days.

i actually cleaned out a bunch of stuff from my car yesterday. got a flat a while back and a lot of stuff from my trunk ended up on the back seat. i also leave too much fishing gear in my car that could get me a busted window. my plan at this point is to remove pretty much anything that would be desirable and only use the trunk to transport anything with any value. hopefully nobody will see any value in a car charger and some gum. maybe i'll even get a rubber snake for the glove compartment. :)

there are plenty of people out there who go around checking your car doors. one thing i have noticed a lot is people who are still sitting in cars in parking lots. on a local frearm forum a guys family members went into a circuit city and somebody stole 5-6 fireams from their truck. i'm just not liking the odds these days. empty is the best car to have.

Thank-you very much for posting this. Freakin unbelievable....... I'll be showing this to the family.

I've always kept my doors locked, regardless of living in a small town. Paranoia, I guess. But better safe than sorry, I suppose. Seriously though, people are terrible. My brother had his car stolen once from a repair shop, one that we've been going to for many, many years. Joke was on them, though; it was there because the brakes weren't working, and they hadn't had a chance to fix them yet. Luckily the car was recovered later that night undamaged and with all its contents. Definitely shook my confidence though...

You think that's bad... have you heard of the Home Depot scam?

Hot girls in bikini's are offering "free" car washes. While you are distracted, they steel your wallet! It is ridiculous...

I am on my third wallet this week...

Lol!

I work construction and about 10 years ago I had a worm drive skil saw sitting in a tool bucket in my truck bed, I was up on the roof working(12 feet away), guy pulls up in a crappy car, grabs the saw and drives off. The whole theft took maybe 5 seconds, I learned if you leave things in your vehicle they are fair game.

Whats funny to me and somewhat Ironic is some of these thieves are so creative they could really benefit the workforce and probably make good honest money if they had a little work ethic.

I cover things up and lock the doors where ever I go. Stuff simply disappears if it isn't out of sight and locked, I learned that the hard way. Same rule for the house or anything else. Lock it up, its the times we live in.

Growing up in some of the not so great areas of Miami. You learn very fast that if you want to keep it you better lock it up. Even then, If they can see it and they want it there isn't much you can do about it. So I keep my stuff in the trunk.

It's sad that life is like this but something we can't change and should be prepared for. On top of this, situational awareness is another major thing to have. When I rode the bus years ago in Anchorage, I would have to catch a bus downtown where there were a lot of people I wouldn't trust. It would amaze me to see many girls blabbing away on their phones oblivious to the fact that a shady guy was staring and watching them. Another thing is when you're paying attention, you may not have to give the police the statement beginning with "they came out of nowhere".

I guess this is the one advantage Oregon has... We're not allowed to pump our own gas!

If a thief tried this on me, they'd open the door to a confused and angry Cypress. Aside from gas stations, I lock the car wherever I go, and I don't leave anything of value in it aside from some change inside the center console. Besides, my driving style doesn't allow for many loose items in the car :D
