Just wanted to sing the praise of an often under rated cheap blade, I've been edc ing my opinel #8 on and off for about 7 months and the thing rules, it has never swelled to the point we;re I have trouble openeing it it's a dandy whittler, takes a crazy shaving sharp edge very easily, and stays that way through a lot of use for those of you that don't have one it is a worth investment of a scan't 8 bucks gove or take, in a world of supersteels and liner locks a simple pair wood handled carbon steel folder steel can hold it's own for everyday chores, at a ridiculously good price, it is easily the mora of folders.

I very much agree, after having had mine for several months now. I had read lots about them, and finally decided to give mine a whirl (just like Moras). The blade gets super-sharp with very little work, and maintains it pretty well. I EDC a #7 happily now, and it does everything I need a blade for. It's developed a very pretty patina now!

I've wasted many more dollars on many things that don't exhibit half the value of my Opinel.

You are absolutely right, thank you RR for reminding me. I have a #8 I bought 40 years ago when we first started camping. As I acquired fancier and prettier things, it got relegated to the drawer. This past year, I took up yet another hobby, woodcarving. Lately I've been pining around for a folding whittler that I could EDC along with my SAK. I have a Case seahorse wharncliffe whittler that I just can't seem to get a decent edge.

You just reminded me to take another look at the Opinel. After a little touchup work with a ceramic rod, it is now razor sharp. The way I like to judge if a knife is sharp enough for carving is if it will cut shavings across the end grain of a piece of wood, such as a pine board. The Opinel does! :)

Opinels, moras, and Old Hickory butcher knives. Do ya really need anything else exept a nice hatchet?:D

I do like the opinels. They are scary sharp, light weight and are great slicers. I'm thinking about getting a couple more. The wood on mine has not swelled either and I have used mine to gut plenty of trout. A little blood (rust) stain on blade but not really an issue. What do you guys think about them being used for bushcraft? The only drawback may be that they are a folder, but they cut and carve really well.

My answer is no:D
Been EDCing a #8 for about 16 years; they do swell once in a while but not so much that I stop carrying. I've gutted many deer including splitting the pelvis and then did much of the butchering too. Just touch up the edge and it keeps on cuttin.

I have the # 8 myself. Great little knife. I haven't carried it since I bought my Case CV Sodbuster, but it has it's place in my PSK pack.

Well I dont edc one, but I do use one often and I must say they get more than rediculous sharp and are darn handy.
