Just a little thing that happened which I thought you all would like to read about.

A female friend who posts on some of the firearm forums I visit had a little experience that I thought everyone here would like to know about.
She posted it and I believe her. It seems that she put off her Christmas shopping until the last minute. The mall was closing and she was headed to her car, in a darkened parking lot, with her arms full of packages. A man came up behind her and tried to grab her Christmas gifts. Stunned, she held on. The assailant grabed her hair and threw her to the pavement pinning one arm behind her. Now, down on the asphalt with the bad guy on top of her, with her free hand she reached into her coat pocket and wrapped her hand around her Spyderco. (I don't know the model.) She thumbed it open and stuck it into the crook one handed! He yelped and ran away. She ran (with her packages) to her car, threw the Spyderco down on the floorboard and headed for the police station. When the officers checked her car, the Spyderco was still on the floor. It had blood on it! They kept the bloody knife for evidence and promised her that they would be on the lookout for someone who went to the emergency room for treatment of a knife wound.
There were many replies to her post. A few said that she should have just handed over her things and ran. Try THAT sometime when a thug has you from behind! I told her that I was proud of her. (And also that she should have twisted that Spyderco a little while it was sticking wherever it went into the thug's body.

Just a little true story that I thought you would all enjoy that involved a Spyderco knife. I'm quite pleased with the outcome of the incident.

Alberta Ed,
I don't know how severely the bad guy was cut. Niether did Sandy. However, I got the impression that she got him good.
All I can say is, WAY TO GO SAL! If it hadn't been for the "Spyderhole" which made for the easy one handed opening, the story might have had a very different ending indeed.

Now that is a story with a happy ending! I'm sure glad I've given my wife Spyderco folders - hope she never needs them for anything other than cutting a little thread off, but if something bad happens, they will be there for her!

Leo Daher

Excellent Story.

And it is a pleasure and a treat to hear that she did not get arrested.

The best part of this is, she is OK!

The next best part, she took action! She responded and quite possibly kept herself from serious harm.

I'll bet she can't wait to get the Spyderco back.

Dirk,
I've been wondering if she will get the Spyderco back. The police took it for evidence, do you think they'll give it back to her eventually?

Wow! What a brave girl!

Hi Will. Nice story, thanx. I have to admit that I'm somewhat pleased when the "bad guy" gets "spanked", especially from a girl.

I'm glad she had the courage to act. Please let her know to contact me and I will replace the missing piece.

At this point, the police should have no further use for the knife. Ask the detective handling the case to tell you how to get it back. You may have to go to the Lt. or Capt. to get it done. If no detective is assigned, go through the Patrol hierarchy, again,to the Lt. or Capt. in charge. Generally, police agencies have no interest in keeping property not actually needed in case preparation.BTW: Hooray for you! It does a heart good to hear of a "bastid" getting stung with a sharp spydie. It's a shame that we have reached the place where fighting back is controversial!

Sal,
Thank you very much! I passed the message on to Sandy that if the police have kept her Spyderco permanently, you'll replace it. I kind of suspected that you would make an offer of generousity. You're a good guy!
Along with too many other things to enumerate, sometimes you need a good, sharp knife for self-defense. Many Spyderco products fit that description quite well indeed.

Thanks again,
Will

Sal,
I really think your offer to replace "Sandy's" Spyderco is most generous and a very nice gesture. I hope she takes you up on your offer. I for one, and I'm sure many others, appreciate your support of the law abiding citizens of this country who refuse to be taken advantage of by leeches of society. This is why my folders have the "Spyderhole."

Will,

Could you ask your friend what model it was? Just out of curiosity.

I would be surprised if she were able to get the knife back anytime soon. Dept policies vary as to how long they hold onto evidence (IF they even classify it as such). The knife used in a legal self-defense situation is likely being held in connection with the bad guy's illegal acts and/or for clearance by the local prosecuting authorites of her actions. Either way, it could be a week, month, or never before it is released. If it were an expensive firearm or collector's piece used in such an event, some argument could be made that it has significant value which the owner is being deprived. It MIGHT matter in some jurisdictions, but certainly not in all. The State's right to hold property in a criminal investigation overshadows (but doesn't erase) one's property-interest in most cases.

I exchanged some e-mails with Sandy this morning. She told me that she's coming here to post. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but you are going to laugh when you find out what model she used to defend herself! Cracked me up!

Will

Hi everyone and thanks for the kind words. Also, thanks for your offer Sal, but I did get the knife back, as they felt there was no reason to keep it. I do appreciate the offer though. I really like the Spyderco knives for the mere fact I could open it with one hand, and it worked well when I needed it most.

And now for the laugh as to what model I used.....a Ladybug
biggrin.gif
Yep that tiny little lady bug sliced the attacker enough to make him back off. I can't say as if there was major damage because honestly I don't think it did too much. I didn't see the wound either. I just swung my arm around and jabbed what I could, and in this case it was his wrist or arm. He held his arm and backed away that's all I know. I am just thankful the knife was accesible, I wasn't hurt, and I got all my gifts home in one piece.

I am from Chicago where we can't carry firearms so I chose to carry a knife and mace with me at all times, and from what happened I think it was a good call.

Thanks again everyone

hey, no foul on the little knife.

remember what "they" say about the best defensive weapon arround, its the one you actualy have on you. the ladybug in your hand did more than the glock in the closet, by far!

Congratulations, Sandy! You sure are a courageous lady!
As for the Ladybug and other petite knives, those who have seen the video "Surviving Edged Weapons", by Calibre Press, know just what a short blade can do... I mean, it's flesh against (sharp) steel!
Sandy, I hope you stay with us!

Hi Sandy. Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for the time to share the story. Glad you got it back.

There was another person on another forum that just defended themselves with a Ladybug. Interesting coincidence.

the Ladybug has a blade about an inch long. About the size of a claw or a fang and much sharper.
