Just a little thing that happened which I thought you all would like to read about.

Any situation that the good person walks aawy and the bad guy runs away with thier tails between legs is a good one. The price of the spyderco is a lot cheaper than the price of the ER or the Funeral home

Welcome Sandy! And again, I glad you're OK and a bad situation turned out about as well as it could. You even got your knife back in a pretty quick fashion.

How many times have we heard small knives criticized for defensive purposes?

I know I never criticised them, but I after this I will have a lot more respect for them.

A fitting end for a coward. Isn't it interesting that stories like these only gets passed along in forums or magazines like the American Hunter? Seems like major newspapers are not interested in publishing these kind of stories. Makes one wonder, doesn't it?

Although I was concerned about the attack, I was absolutely delighted at the outcome! Because of a bad experience in her childhood, Sandy was afraid of firearms. (Although she maintained an interest.) She came to a few boards, met us, some of us gave her instruction and took her shooting and now she has gotten over her fear and loves to shoot. The problem is that she lives in Chicago. Only the bad guys have firearms. Mayor Daley has seen to it that the honest people are prevented, by law, from owning a pistol. So, Sandy carries her Spyderco "Ladybug". I have many Spyderco knives, the Ladybug would be about the last one I'd choose to defend myself. (I've thought about my razor sharp "Toad", though. I've cut myself enough accidentally and didn't even feel it to realize that a small wickedly sharp knife can do a LOT of damage in determined hands.) However, you see how it went. Sandy put her Ladybug to good use and the bad guy ran off yelping.

Sal, I think the other story you heard was the same story (was it posted by Son Tao?) If so, that's me and he just copied and pasted what I wrote over at TFL. So you are just seeing double

Thanks for the welcome, I think I am going to start hanging out here once in awhile. I really like the Spyderco knife and the 'eye' on the blade is a most excellent invention. Had I needed two hands to get it open, I wouldn't have gotten to it. I plan on purchasing another larger knife (Spyderco of course) in the near future. When my daughter is old enough, she will get one too.

Will you couldn't have said it better "Only the bad guys have firearms". It's the truth here in Chicago.

Great going, Sandy! And great going, Sal! Class acts from both of you.

Sandy, I don't know what the blade limit is in Chicago, but it is 3" in Washington, DC, and I find that my Native comes in at 3+1/32". I have only just received the Gunting that I ordered, and it is just 3" and is a dedicated defense knife for most. I wanted it because it has large scales for the size of the blade and other mechanical bits that would seem to make it easier for my arthritic paws to work it. I could never manipulate a Ladybug, for instance. Another possible suggestion would be the Delica which, at 2+7/8" of blade would not present any problems legally, and is the subject of several self-defense classes. Its big brother/sister, the Endura with a 3.5" or so blade would also make a great choice. The Delica, Endura, and Lightweight Native are all inexpensive as far as good knives go which is another point in their behalf. The Gunting is not too expensive, but rather more than the others. It is also much more solidly made, with double full liners and G10 scales. It shares with the Native the CPM440V blade, of which I am inordinately fond, but there are those who are not (are you out there, rockspyder?). Just some Spydie thoughts for you.

Hi Sandy. Yes, I'm seeing double. That's good though. hate to have two people go through that discomfort. Glad you're OK.

Probably time for a slightly larger carry pieces though. Not too many can open a Ladybug with one hand.

Sandy,
FullerH is right!
I have a "Delica" that came RAZOR sharp right from the box. I carry it in my hip pouch along with a small flashlight and Colt Mustang Pocketlite. Delicas are a great defense knife. The blade may, in actuality, be under three inches long, but when you thumb it open it would look like a sword to the bad guy. I carry mine a lot. Not that expensive, solid as a rock, and a good defensive knife, and THAT equals a very good combination!

Just curious. Did any account of this episode appear in any newspaper anywhere? If there indeed was police involvement, then there certainly was a report filed. And if there was a report filed, some cop-beat reporter must have included it in his or her daily crime roundup. Does the story appear anywhere on the web where we can read more about it? Can it be substantiated?

Of course I'm out here, Hugh.

And I HAVE grown fonder of 440V... it's just not my favorite, and I know its limitations. However, I am thinking of the Gunting AND the Chinook. Probably will just go for the Chinook, though....someday. I still have to get the drop point Moran.... Sorry, though... I ramble. I'd highly recommend the ltwt Native, to anyone.

That was an awsome story. I love to see a grub like that gets hurt, anyway I ordered a Chinook for myself, (havent received it yet, but soon I hope), and I think I'm going to order something for my wife, I already carry a Emerson Commander but I loved the look of the Chinook, and from what I've read it seems it is a super strong knife. I wonder if I should just give the Chinook to my wife or order her something else. Hmmmmmm, I'll order her something else, probably the Military and/or the ladybug, gee I'd probably have to keep the Military then, decisions, decisions...

I could never understand why people in this forum and others knock little blades so much...

My favorite defensive carry by far is the Native, but I can't carry it everywhere. Certainly not to airports, clubs, or the like.

So what knife do I depend on, which I must consider discreet yet which can potentially inflict great damage to an attacker? The Dragonfly, of course! People have disregarded this little knife a lot for defensive purposes, but I think it is an EXCELLENT example of a little knife which feels, looks (when opened), and stabs like a big knife. I'm sure a few stabs with a Dragonfly against a bad guy would make him at least panic and stop the attack, and at most cause very heavy damage. When I look at that blade, I sure wouldn't want to be at the wrong end of it!

Anybody else have any suggestions or comments about little Spyderco knives which would make good self-defense tools?

Glad she is ok. Imagine if she had had a Military?

Why not? Is this a PR thing? They certainly are legal at the airport here in the US. I have carried a Native thought security here. Dropped it in the tray, handed it to the guard, walked through, retrieved my things. No questions asked. I've done this several times with my Native Ltwt, non-serrated. I doubt serrated would be any different, since they didn't even look twice at the knife, and I certainly am not going to open it before putting it in the tray.

Great going Sandy! To think of the possibilities of such a traumatic event without some way to defend oneself from an attack like that is awful scary. I have a stainless Delica that I carry mainly for miscreants such as the guy who attacked you,Sandy.I also have a Ladybug for my every day utility knife.I have occasion to have to cut through tape that can be several layers thick and panduit tie wraps that are made from a nylon type plastic(very tough indeed) and I use my Ladybug with great effect.I literaly sails through this aforementioned material and makes my job easier when I have to remove it. Flesh and bone tissue wouldn't fair well against the onslaught of the mighty Ladybug after seeing what it does when utilized on the material I cut. I wonder what the outcome would have been if you used the Delica or the Harpy? Somethig to think about.I LOOOOOVE my Spydies and would't be caught awake without them. I would feel absolutley naked without my Delica and Ladybug. I'm glad that you are ok and would kindly suggest that you look into some of the other fine Spydies that this great company makes. Godspeed!
