That isn't the half of it. In the past five years our town has sold off hundreds of acres that were zoned either as "greenbelt" or "Land preserve", to developers that have put up McMansions, one on top of the other. I know there are two sides to every story but our last First Selectman was as crooked as a witch's finger and he gave out tax exemptions to these developers, one of which is a brother in law, which in my book kind of cancels out any benefit to the town. :mad:

We have several areas that are better protected from this by a Land Trust funded by our citizens. Occasionally money that is mostly meant for maintenace has to be used for lawyers.

I am missing the snow, myself. We have spring up here, it is nuts.... You all are getting our cold weather everywhere else....

Oh well, if it had not been warm, we would be devastated. We have had a bunch of precip.

I think those scratches on the tree were from a buck deer "rub". They do that in the late summer/early fall to mark their territory during the rut/mating season.Bobcat scratching/marking posts are about 6"- 10" wide and 1-1.5' long on a good sized tree and really tear the bark to shreds. I dont know if it has any bearing but the ones Ive found have been predominantly on rough barked trees{oak,ash,locust}.In your picture I think I see individual antler scrapes.--KV
 
Thanks Kvaughn. I thought bobcat cause of the depth of the scratch and I have seen bobcat in the area. However I never saw a scratch and there are a bunch of the deer in the area as well. :) So I am content in going with your theory of a deer.

A few photos from my early morning hike.






The hike starts out in a wild meadow,


…an old farm that has gone back to nature,


…a great cover setting for upland game.











Past the meadow the trail enters a deep dark stand of Hemlocks,

…and hidden there, …a stream cascades down a deep ravine.






This time of year the cascade is covered by a tunnel of ice,

…only breaking through its crystalline enclosure in areas too wide for the ice to span.

Most people have no clue to its existence.



It’s up here in Litchfield County, just a few minutes from my homestead.



It’s not a very long hike,

…but a very cool spot on a hot summer day,

…or very spectacular in icy weather.



Here’s a photo from one of the same vantage points in warmer weather.






But it is not without its dangers,

…this ravine has recently taken the life of a hiker,

…rocky outcroppings overhanging the gorge tempt hikers with great views,

…but nature’s traps must be respected.

That's sad. But yeah this season and weather create some nasty situations. The freezing, then thawing, then freezing again make your footing pretty sketchy. The 1st inch of snow appears to be soft, but under is all ice and very slippery. I hate getting close to edges of clifs, but it makes for a good picture:rolleyes:
