Just a quick ?

Tom, Doing it the way you describe really isnt batoning, I have done this before on bones and pelvis' etc. I have no problems with that! But hitting the spine of the knife to drive it through something hard... well I just feel that the hollow grind on the knives is too weak for such abuse and I have seen too many pics posted here to say its not abuse ;) And occassionally the saw does need to come out, but only if its along!

I agree Jim, i described the way i split the pelvic so batoning can be avoided, i would only hammer on the spine of my knives as a last resort in an extreme situation, so i feel batoning is abuse, a knife is for cutting/slicing so if i want to chop or baton i use my hatchet.

 No, Tom I agree 100% with you!:D

I would not have the nerve to send a knife that has been used in this manner to Buck expecting them to make it good. Specially if it was a $30 knife that could be bought for $7.00. I think that is taking advantage of the manufacturer.

I have mentioned before I am a hatchet man when it come to chopping anything. I got one of the old style Buck hatchets that was sharpened a little on Ebay pretty cheap. It is light, thin and tough. It had been hit on back with something. Of the twelve elk I have done or helped; only used it on one, used a folding saw on all the others. But carry the axe because if schist hits the fan it will build a shelter, fire, spear, snowshoes, raft, etc. better than a saw. If I run out of bullets I would like my 118 in one hand and my hatchet in the other. Guess I just grew up watching Fess on Daniel Boone too much....300$s

I didn`t really want to send the knife back to buck ,my buddy did pay about $25 not a bad price at the time (the diamondback that goes for $8 is the smaller model and both are no longer made and therefore on clearance) I just wanted to know what everyone thought they might say as I do not think it is abuse and as you can see in the pics I have there is a rust intrusion in the (stainless) steel the happened before the break as they are so cheap now he plans to buy another (loves the larger handle size on the diamondback ,not so much in love with the new omni models) these are a very comfortable quality knife a very good deal if you can find one and I for one wish they would have kept making it.

I just wanted to know what everyone thought they might say... as I do not think it is abuse and as you can see in the pics

Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but if you still don't think that is abuse I don't really think you want to know what others think ;)

Do you see the huge chunks out of the blade?
The broken tip is abuse ;) Maybe the knife shouldnt have split in half, BUT the tip breaking off and the chunks missing in the cutting edge is abuse... Once the knife got stuck in the pelvis, you can't twist the knife to get it out... I know I know, millions of guys do this everyday and noone ever damages their knives...
BTW, (JMHO) If I were to treat knives like this I would opt for a sturdier blade... maybe an Omni ;) maybe an axe! ;)
Good luck..........................................................................................

there is a rust intrusion in the (stainless) steel the happened before the break

Did the "broken area" rust because of "materials left on the blade" after it was broken? OR was this rust evident the moment the blade split in half?

I don`t think batoning a pelvis is abuse having said that I don`t do it with anything thinner than 3/16 if an inch thick and even then usually not less than 1/4 and not with a narrow blade, and a few guys said they didn`t think it was abuse just not a great idea :foot:.the blade chunks left the blade at the time of the break all damage other than the tip was instant and not part of an aftermath AKA no twisting :p(tip broke off a few moments before, and might have helped him decide to go ahead and beat on the thing) and yeah the rust was there when it broke I have seen that before but not in stainless steel only in high carbon or plain carbon steel tools and knives a good reason not to rely on carbon steel for survival..no fun when the only knife you have snaps in half.

As one who has been through the whole "broke my blade while batoning" thing, I can understand both sides of the issue. I don't think there is anything wrong with contacting Buck with an honest story of what you were doing when your knife broke. Don't expect or demand a replacement, rather let them decide if they want to replace it under warranty or not.

I found out from Buck during my blade breakage that there was a small batch of blades that had flaw in the steel and my knife was part of that batch. Your pic of the broken surface of the blade looks oddly similar to mine (I know nothing about steel or what a it should look like when broken):

BTW: The Diamondback is a pretty decent knife. I picked one up last Summer and put it with my outdoor BBQ set. Works well for slicing veggies and meats for grilling.

Hi messersmith thanks backing me up (not that anyone was against me) WOW you broke a nighthawk!! I have two I hope they are not from the same batch ,I can`t imagine what you must have felt like breaking that thing as thick as it is must have surprised the hell out of you. I have split fire wood with mine and thrown it for hours stabbed it through a quarter you name it never so much as a scratch. I really don`t care to send the diamondback to buck (it`s not worth the postage) however I think I will send them the pics to see if they might know why it broke the way it did ,he did use it a fair while before it broke so no harm no foul stuff breaks. It just bums you out when you have a knife from a company known for quality and it snaps apart on you. It was probably just a fluke thing and they are a nice knife and a great brand .

Surprised isn't the word for it... lol there is a lengthy thread about the whole thing posted back in March. The search function is disabled for non-paying cheapies like me so I can't find the link to post.

...WOW you broke a nighthawk!! ...

Yep...he did. Right outta the box.
Not one of those things we bring up...like sitting at Thanksgiving dinner with your extended family and starting a conversation about your crazy uncle doing time and still owing ya money for bail but he drove up to the gig in his new car.

But since Messy brought it up...it was funny!!!!! (for me anyway...one of those pain & pleasure things...like watching a NASCAR wreck when no one gets hurt)
