Even after doing this for 15+ years, I occasionally still get bit. This was caused by me being careless while grinding, wide open, with a fresh 36 grit belt.

BUT... at least the Bowie I was working on came out unharmed!!

It happens...glad to see the fingers are all still there. I would probably get careless without "little reminders" like this. I had an old belt pop at the splice about a week ago while I was grinding, luckily there was no damage done but it did remind me that every move in the shop needs to be thought out, and even after doing that, you need to be prepared for unexpected things to happen.

I had a reminder yesterday as well. A 60 grit belt broke (first time that has happened) while I was profiling a blade. Popped me on the top of my head pretty good, but I'm glad it didn't hit my face because I didn't have safety goggles on.

Btw that is a nice looking bowie.

Nice bowie! Funny, when I slip at the grinder or something, the first thing that takes priority as whether the knife got hurt... I could be fountaining blood from my hand, and just feel relieved that the blade didn't get hurt.

its healing ok, got a bunch of grease in it yesturday while shifting the dies on the Little Giant, but overall... doing ok. Just wanted to kindly remind everyone to not be too complacent!

Man, just this morning I got bit by my disc grinder running at full tilt wit a fresh 80# sheet on it. Nice little V notch ground into my little finger knucle. I think its the best plunge grind I have ever done, lol! Too bad its not on a knife!

Truer words were never spoken. Last night I was grinding out a blade profile. I had a table set up on my grinder running super fast with a 36 grit belt. As I put the blade down on the table for a second it bumped against the belt and slammed down against the table, catching the tip of my pinky finger. My first thought was to make sure I didn't warp the Damascus blade. My second thought was to look at my finger and saw that the tip had mashed off and blood was dripping on the floor. Thankfully the Damascus was all good. I should buy stock in band aid companies.

Hey Matt, don't you be losing your fingers and such, you gotta finish my knife first!

You're not chickening out are ya? :D

Cheers......Pete

Caught the edge of a brand new 220 belt the other day at 80-90 speed with the tip of my right ring finger. Only thing that kept it from cutting my finger worse was the nail which it still frayed a bit. Like a paper cut on steroids. Stung quite a bit.

Beware the edge of a mylar based belt, like a 9 micron. Holy Crap! Cuts flesh like a
razor when it's on a belt grinder. Regular belt edges give a nick, mylar gives slices.
Uff Da!!
