Just A Walk In The Park On A Warm Winter Day

The wife and I decided to delay our valentine's celebration by one day to avoid the crowds at the restaurants...and maybe find a quiet secluded spot along the river walk after our dinner...so Valentine's Day itself was just another day for me. After work I rode down town to pay some bills, get a sandwich, and go hang out at the park for a while and wait on the sunset.

I like high places with a view so any chance I get I'll park at the top of one of the parking garages here and just look around. The top of the parking garage at the new EPB building is the highest one at the south end of the city. There seems to be a major project going on with a lot of holes being dug in the streets and large steel plates covering them.

After paying my bills, and picking up a sandwich at the sandwich shop down stairs, I rode over to the park to kill time and wait on the sunset. Lots of people at the park in various levels of clothing...seems the unusually warm weather had some confused. Lots of couples just hanging out in the sunshine.

I found the yin yang, contrast/balance of this shot interesting.

I decided to just enjoy my lunch and observe the activities of the unusually warm winter day. The Izula is the perfect size to keep in a pouch on my camera case, and did a fine job slicing the sandwich into to make eating with one hand more manageable.

There were people kicking a ball around...

And people playing frisbee. This young lady spent a lot of time jumping...

and a lot of time picking up the little disc...but no-one seemed to mind...

Some girl playing some sort of scavenger hunt type of game I think...or then again perhaps a serial killer leaving clues...

The moon rose long before the sun set.

Then came the high points of the day, the sunset and meeting Ethel. Ethel is an extremely talented photographer and another lover of sunsets.

She was hoping for more colors, pity she had to catch a flight before the sunset the next day.

Cool, glad it brightened your day

I usually just wipe it off and let the edge take a patina, and then clean it as needed on a leather belt or fine ceramic stone.

I like the pic of the City workers "not working" but staring at the young woman in pink LOL !

I nearly ran into her getting off the elevator downstairs as I was going to Jimmy John's. I don't blame them at all really. I think she is the wife of a city official (guy in brown jacket), and she put me in mind of the wife of one of the clients I used to work for who would show up on the job site wearing a short skirt with nothing on under it. The job site would always grow quiet as she walked up the two story circular stair case to the pent house, and she'd always have a little grin on her face....

You would make a good stalker, my man. ;)

Nah, not into stalking, I just like to observe my surroundings and people being themselves. There are about 25 cameras on poles in and around that park, and always a dozen or so tourists snapping pics...not like I'm invading any-one's privacy :) Though some of those shots were taken from about 80 meters away.

Nice city. Hard to find that many people in Houston in one place outside enjoying the outdoors. Almost impossible to find someone having a picnic. I think everyone is scared of getting mugged.

Another great post Brian! I haven't seen that many couples since an old high school dance! I got a good kick out of the guys checking out the frisbee girl. You know we're always in such a rush going through life that we miss out on so man little things. That's what I like about your pics, they pic up those everyday life things that I miss out on. Great stuff!!!

I used to work next to Herman Park and have had a couple of picnics there. Of course that being said, I wouldn't want to walk around there at night by myself.

For those not familiar, Herman Park is Houston's equivalent to New York's Central Park.

nice pics, man. i know you have closer shots of that girl in pink, don't hold back. feel free to post them here too :D as for that blue painted hand rail, that reminds me of a csi (the las vegas orig one) episode.

Great pics, man. Way to roll with your inner perv. :D
