She had two of her boys with her, the 3 year old and the 4th grader. About 200 miles just to get there, a couple of pages of Edmunds quotes and a fair idea what she wanted in a car. Her sedan died this last week. It was just our turn to pay the Piper and get it over with, transportation not far off from food as a neccesity in this world.
The kids were hungry. She asked about a White one, over there, but he steered her from those, saying they were too expensive. He brought her to two small wagons, AWD, about what she'd been looking for in a SUV to get her through the mountains and to work. The boys were tagging along, but they really were getting hungry.
After a test drive, she decided she wanted a Brown one, and after sitting on a chair for a hour or so, the price came up around 25,000. He graciously allowed 2000 bucks or so for a trade-in, the kids are really starting to squirm, and couldn't she leave and come right back after feeding them? No, no, just five minutes more. And five.
Somewhere's around 9 OClock at night I get a call from the finance guy at the dealership. The first thing I said to him was;
"You take advantage of my wife and small sons yet?"
We laughed that off, and he told me about the extended warranty she wanted. I talked to her briefly and she said it was done and they were coming home.
This morning reality climbed in. You know, she did real well with our last truck, it did not occur to me anything unusual would happen. I wasn't with her, but the price range was pretty cut and dried per our research of books and the ads in the area.
They took 4000 cash, our old car, and charged her a couple thousand more to boot of what the vehicle should have sold for in the first place. There are vehicles right now on the lot just like hers at advertised prices 3 and 4 thousand dollars lower. She didn't see those, the salesmen led her to a few that had no marker.
Come to find out rather than being previously owned by one person, the vehicle actually was run by Hertz. Come to find it came from California, and for all I know still has all the handicapped smog stuff on it. You can leave California, but the State will follow you....
I don't know what will happen. They got in at 1pm last night and the dealership isn't open on Sunday. Tomorow is going to be an interesting day. My lawyer says it will be, anyway.
So here's to hoping for the best. The outfit advertises as being family orientated. And they knew to get the frayed woman with the two hungry kids pushing to sign and get released.
It's an ugly feeling, knowing someone has been hurt, took, lied to.
We're in debt and need the money, you know? I don't give out many thousand dollar tips.
And I actually feel bad about the old car. It had served us well. She left it with them
I went to bed at 130 am and got up at 5 am. I'm not quick enough to make the story funny. And we were shaking today- that anxiouis feeling in your gut, everybody had it, even the kidlings.
Man. It's OK, but Man. Tomorow we'll have some fun. (and at the same time, here in HI land we had an idea floated that Yangdu was less than honest! Sort of a money and conscience weekend)
