She had two of her boys with her, the 3 year old and the 4th grader. About 200 miles just to get there, a couple of pages of Edmunds quotes and a fair idea what she wanted in a car. Her sedan died this last week. It was just our turn to pay the Piper and get it over with, transportation not far off from food as a neccesity in this world.

The kids were hungry. She asked about a White one, over there, but he steered her from those, saying they were too expensive. He brought her to two small wagons, AWD, about what she'd been looking for in a SUV to get her through the mountains and to work. The boys were tagging along, but they really were getting hungry.

After a test drive, she decided she wanted a Brown one, and after sitting on a chair for a hour or so, the price came up around 25,000. He graciously allowed 2000 bucks or so for a trade-in, the kids are really starting to squirm, and couldn't she leave and come right back after feeding them? No, no, just five minutes more. And five.

Somewhere's around 9 OClock at night I get a call from the finance guy at the dealership. The first thing I said to him was;
"You take advantage of my wife and small sons yet?"
We laughed that off, and he told me about the extended warranty she wanted. I talked to her briefly and she said it was done and they were coming home.

This morning reality climbed in. You know, she did real well with our last truck, it did not occur to me anything unusual would happen. I wasn't with her, but the price range was pretty cut and dried per our research of books and the ads in the area.

They took 4000 cash, our old car, and charged her a couple thousand more to boot of what the vehicle should have sold for in the first place. There are vehicles right now on the lot just like hers at advertised prices 3 and 4 thousand dollars lower. She didn't see those, the salesmen led her to a few that had no marker.

Come to find out rather than being previously owned by one person, the vehicle actually was run by Hertz. Come to find it came from California, and for all I know still has all the handicapped smog stuff on it. You can leave California, but the State will follow you....

I don't know what will happen. They got in at 1pm last night and the dealership isn't open on Sunday. Tomorow is going to be an interesting day. My lawyer says it will be, anyway.

So here's to hoping for the best. The outfit advertises as being family orientated. And they knew to get the frayed woman with the two hungry kids pushing to sign and get released.

It's an ugly feeling, knowing someone has been hurt, took, lied to.
We're in debt and need the money, you know? I don't give out many thousand dollar tips.

And I actually feel bad about the old car. It had served us well. She left it with them

I went to bed at 130 am and got up at 5 am. I'm not quick enough to make the story funny. And we were shaking today- that anxiouis feeling in your gut, everybody had it, even the kidlings.

Man. It's OK, but Man. Tomorow we'll have some fun. (and at the same time, here in HI land we had an idea floated that Yangdu was less than honest! Sort of a money and conscience weekend)

Thanks Howard. I like the Edmund's guide. They do good stuff.
I'll take a look at the link.

I wish the jokesabout used car salesmen were not true . I don,t know if its a symptom of the pressure people are under to get rid of aconsignment of cars or just the type of business thieves gravitate to cause of relatively easy pickings . I hope everything works out for you . Keep your cool Munk . That is if you can .

As for Yangdu being dishonest or even the suggestion of it ? It is absurd . She proved that to me the very first day I was here .

Oh, oh. I don't like the sound of this.

Fairly sure you don't want a previous rental car, though. People tend to, well, treat them like they're not theirs.

Think Howard's right, that you can change your mind 48-72 hrs into it... I think.

Good luck, munk.

There was an article about used cars salesmen on the net at one time i believe. A writer that went undercover for for a car magazine for several weeks.

I've found dealing with car dealers of any kind is like dealing with the cops. Keep your mouth shut as much as possible, be as aware of what they are saying as what they are not saying. Don't volunteer information.

My uncle gave me the best advise. Don't volunteer a serious number. Do your homework, and if you get a feeling, walk.

Good Luck Brother Munk.

We'll need it. We prayed at dinner about it. We're trying not to be anxious, but I know she's having a hard time going to sleep upstairs.

I feel bad because it happened and bad I wasn't there to stop it. I didnt think I was still neccesary in the relatively civilized city of ________ MT.

That's a real shame, munk. :( I really hate it when somebody takes advantage of another person like that.:thumbdn:

Best of luck in getting it all sorted out.

The best advice that I ever got was to do everything over the internet. It's a bit of a pain, but far less of a pain than dealing with commission-driven salespeople. Figure out what the going rate for the vehicle that you want is and make the offer via email. If they refuse, start trying other dealerships. Chances are that one of them will meet it if it's at all reasonable. Print up that email and show it to your local dealership. Watch what happens.

When you think about it, you're making the stealerships fight one another. If that's not just plain cool, I don't know what is. :)

This doesn't help you now, but it can help you the next time...and there's always a next time, right?

Actually I've heard that the rental cars can be very good as they're supposed to be well maintained, one reason they get all the miles out of them.
I've looked into potentially buying one myself but direct from Hertz and not a dealer.
However I understand that Hertz and some other rental car companies sometimes put their cars up for sale with certain reputable dealers, the key word being reputable.
I would be concerned if it was a Kalifornicator car though just because of all the excess smog equipement.:(

And that's the other thing, Yvsa; I got to find out if the car is handicapped by a bunch of smog stuff.

That's aggravating stuff Munk, I wish you luck and success in getting things sorted out.

That really makes me angry.

Trying to good and positive, but ........
ok, I'm not going to go there.

Good thoughts and positive energy going to the Munks. Trying to resist the "dark side".

Just call a chain parts house like you are looking for a fuel, air intake, or exhaust system part, give em the vin, and they will be able to tell you, Munk.
Some models of car arent even available as 49 state models, just Calif spec. that go nation-wide.

That stinks Munk. Good luck tomorrow. Prayers from Atlanta too.
