Just Askin......

We will have to agree to disagree with the notion of what is respectful. If I miss the intent of some of the posts, well easily done in an online forum. In previous incarnations I have been on the receiving end of similar respectful musings and truly, that are anything but when you are the person of interest.

I have written and deleted another paragraph three times and I think I will stop here. I need to go to the bank to get a check to pay for a Mammoth Bark Annual.

Peace,
- Jan

I don't think anyone is against the fact that the umnumzan needs an over travel lock mechanism. Actually I think most people are in favor of having that feature on their frame locks. Its just the design and the way it was implemented don't go well with the knife. I think CRK is capable of coming up with something better. And who knows, maybe they are thinking of a new design. But if we don't voice our opinions and offer constructive criticism then were doing a disservice to the product and company.

I trust we will agree to agree that CRK is full of awesome?

Don't forget the "peace" part. Two people saying what they think does not have to be a bad thing. I appreciate your posts and should have said so before.

I am not sure how, "If you do not like it, do not buy it", went from one specific knife to the whole brand. I believe you said yourself that you did not like the Umnumzaan? No worries, don't buy it.

Hi Jan,

I love CRK as a company. I don't like the Umnumzaan, but I know many do. Im sure its a great knife if its your style. CRK doesn't mess around. Manufacturing tolerances that seem unmatched in the production world. Its the design that holds me back on the Umnumzaan, just not my thing. The Sebenza is the knife I hold near and dear. Love the design.

I don't have to like the Umnumzaan to like CRK.

Get my drift? :)

I once saw a pic of an ummi with 2 ceramic balls, the sencond one prevented lock bar traver both outside and towards the handle
was probably left and they made it with 1 ball only

This sounds interesting, i'd like to see it. do you think you could find this pic again?

Jan I

I know i came across harsh. I'm sorry.

I want to buy the Umnamzaan, but i was holding out until the the 'Zaan got over travel stop. Then when I saw the new over travel stop, I didn't like it. Now I'm holding out longer because i have a feeling the over travel stop may change. When i pay this much for a knife, i want to love everything about it.

I have voted with my wallet. But i think CRK wants to know why i didnt vote for the 'zaan and what he can do to get my vote.

Just my humble opinion :) but I really don't think that a normal user who's not going to try intentionally bending the lockbar needs the OTS. Realistically, the amount of meat you can get onto the bar is limited and I don't forsee any real life situation in which I'd over-extend the lockbar. Ironically, I would be much more able and likely to over-extend the lockbar on a Sebenza original/Classic/21 (with the large cutout for lockbar access) simply because I can get a lot more of my thumb on the lockbar - but that's never happened, either. If you read Ann Reeve's post about the OTS, it's clear that it's there to inhibit people who think they know more about lockbar tension than Chris Reeve Knives, not because the design really needed it.

So, the short version of that would be to consider buying one of the pre-OTS Umnus while they're still available. :)

Thats interesting, but probably a good way to prevent annoying "warranty work".

From CRK's, totally agree, and that's why they updated the design. What I'm trying to make clear, though, is that unless you fit into the specific user profile that prompted this update, you probably don't need to be concerned about buying a knife that doesn't have it.

Thanks for all the input guys. There was alot of good stuff being said and maybe a couple of things a little bit off topic.:p BTW, Rich just send me your knives and I'll be sure not to man-handled em bro!:D

One thing I wanted to mention in closing is that I was in NO means bashing on CRK, sorry if it came across that way. I was trying to express my passion for Mister Reeve's knives but at the same time keep the topic light hearted with some playful wording. It was NOT meant to be disrespectful in any way. I am and sure to always be a huge fan of the tools that come out of CRK.

Lastly, I truely believe that a company that doesn't listen to their consumers is doomed to fail. Regardless of how great of a product they have, if they refuse to change or make changes to those products eventually the consumer will go elsewhere with their money. As was mention, "speak with your wallet". The company that is in it for the long haul doesn't want the consumer to do this, so they establish some form of means to communicate with them. Whether it be a blog, forum, mail/emails, test trials, shows, etc, the company that survives all the storms is the one that is willing to listen to respectful, knowledgeable, constructive criticism. Just the fact that CRK installed the "thumbtack" (being playful here:p) on the Zaan states that Mr Reeves is listening and concerned how his knives are being used and why they are being used correctly or incorrectly in this case. The fact that the Zaan even exists is a statement that CRK is listening to it's consumers. For years CRK fans wanted a more tactical, beefy, sturdy knife and CRK came out with the Umnumzaan. Which btw I feel is a great supplement to the Classic Sebenza. So much so I now have a total of 4 custom leather sheaths for them and typically carry both at the same time simply cuz I can't make up my mind which one to carry. Carry both! Problem solved. Anyhoo....Just wanted to clear the air a little bit. Not trying to stir the discussion back up but I did want to add my 2 little cents to the topic and side topic that it generated.

Thanks again guys! Great discussion and glad it didn't get ugly.

I don't think so Solstice. But hey, if your ever on the east coast, I will let you check them out. I will even let you cut a piece of thread with one :p:D

once again, i have wasted the whole night looking at Umnumzaans online. I want one so badly...
I hope Chris Reeve does something about the over travel stop soon.
sometimes, i get the feeling like he is trying to punish us for all the lockbars hes had to fix of the years.
