Great thread!

I think FortyTwoBlades hit the nail on the head when he described functional simplicity. It always boils down to that functional simplicity, regardless of traditional or modern... The reduced formula wins... Less is more. Traditional knives have functional simplicity in spades.

It isn't just the functional simplicity either, it is the tool-capabilities. With a traditional slip-joint you can have multiple blades with different sizes, shapes, and cutting angles taken from the handle. With modern knives, you generally just get one THICK blade.

In terms of speed during casual use, a lot of people overlook pocket clips as being slow to put back in your pocket. They are praised for being the fastest out of the pocket, but what about going back in it? A slip-joint slips right back in. You can even toss a slip joint back in your pocket! ...If you compare a pocket clip knife to a slip joint, and measure the amount of time it takes to take them out, cut something, then put them back -you might be surprised with what is fastest. I have found that they generally take the same amount of time to "completely use." The kicker is that pocket clips tend to have outliers in the "tests," where the clip snags on a pocket rim and you have to fiddle with your pocket with TWO HANDS to get your modern knife back in your pocket properly. ...Interesting:D

Why struggle with clips and locks, when everything can be smooth and easy!?

(Dont get me wrong, like and own a lot of modern knives, but as far as everyday use, slip joints are more than an aesthetic choice IMHO)
