Hi All,

Fast question but I bet the answer is longer.

What speed do you grind at? Currently on my old Baldor 2 x 48 I grind at 3750 fpm which I think is way to fast. So chime in I could really use some input here.

I have a three speed KMG setup.

I generally profile and hog stock on high speed, refine my grinds on medium and finish them on slow.

Pre heat treat most grinding is done at full tilt, post heat treat it depends on the grit. I can run a new 40 grit belt and high speed and get very little heat build up but with a 600 belt I always want it running slow.

Shaping scales is pretty much the same way...

Forgot to mention that the motor I have is a 5 hp compressor motor. 110 or 220 at 3450rpm so i think that KMG's 3 speed pulley system will run to fast. 6900, 3450, 1725 with this motor. Im thinking I want to grind at about 1050 rpm. Thats a 1.75" on the motor and a 5.75" on the machine. I have the old Baldor to hog on. Thoughts?

I'd try it and see - I usually grind metal pretty fast. But wood sometimes needs a slower speed.

That gonna run awful fast,Need to be on the lookout for a 1750 1-1/2-2HP farm duty TEFC motor.3500SFPM is still fast and the low speed at around 800SFPM sometimes is not slow enough.
