Just Bought My First 940...ok I Get It Now!

I have always held Benchmade knives in high regard, however I never owned very many. It is kind of funny how there comes certain turning points for knife nuts that result in a whole new vane of interest with the smallest occurrence.

Last year, my best friend sent me a Mini Grip and I was immediately taken with the quality of the knife and the edge holding ability of the steel. I had been on a traditional knife kick (still love my old timey knives) for quite awhile so most steels I was using on a regular basis were mid range steels at best. The Mini Griptilian made my mouth water at the possibilities in edge holding.

Since then, I have been buying up quite a few Benchmades and rotating my carry knives. Of course anyone following any Benchmade fan sites will quickly find a lot of 940 love out there. Honestly, at first I was kinda like, "Ok, what's the big deal?"

Today I bought a 940 and I can now see this being in my pocket quite a bit. There are so many things about this knife that I like. I can really see where the love comes from.

I am interested to hear from others...what is it about the 940 that makes it a fan favorite?

Congrats on your first 940.

There’s something about the ergonomics of the handle, the quick deployment and the weight & balance that make 940s my favorite EDC. I prefer the CF and G10 handles over th aluminum scales, as aluminum tends to get cold in the winter, and less forgiving with one tiny drop or pocket rub.

I wish Benchmade would take a page out of the Spyderco playbook and make the 940 out of an assortment of Premium Steels in Sprint Runs.

Someday.

Enjoy the 940!

A great knife, congrats. I personally love the aluminum handle models, just love how they age and how rigid they are, there's just no flex when you squeeze them. I'll admit tho those CF handle models look dam nice too. I also love the 943 just as much and swap between them both for my office carry, always been a sucker for a pointy tip on a knife.

I completely agree with you on the aluminum scales absent of flex. The 940 seems to have a nicer “snap” when opened on the aluminum handle models too which I attribute to the aluminum.

Yep, there's just something about that metalic click sound, plus seeing that 10 year review of the aluminum 940 on youtube just made me smile. It looks beat to hell but just has so much character and functions just like day 1. Minus the blade being shorter from a million sharpenings :)

I think the green Osborne is such a stunning knife. I haven't bought one because I'm a bit hesitant about the tanto blade for some reason (maybe I think it's too tacticool for EDC? I'm not sure)... but what a beautiful knife. Maybe one day.

the 940 is an all-time favorite for me from Benchmade. I love the fact it has plenty of blade in a slim edc friendly package, has great ergos and the blade profile with its reinforced tip is perfect.

Yes. 940-1601. Prettiest scales of all the series IMO.
Wish it had a "premium" steel like 390 but for how nice it looks, I can get over the D2 which isn't a bad steel anyway.

Oh..is the Cabelas model D2? I thought it would be s30v too. I might get one and switch out blades.

Yes. I think all their BM exclusives are D2 (all their grips are) I thought about swapping blades too but then I'd be $500+ into 2 of the same knives and if I sold one of the frankin 940's to recoup the costs, it would kind of void the warranty (I checked and BM stated if the blade needed replacement it would be returned to the original steel)

The 940 is my favorite lightweight (featherweight, really!) knife by a country mile. I went with the 940-1 for its steel, CF, and stonewashed blade, but they all look good!

I'm glad you were pleasantly surprised by handling one, and I know exactly what you mean about not seeing what the fuss was about until you did -- it took me a long time to finally take a good hard look at the 940, after which I bought one and got what the fuss was about. ;)

A somewhat local knife store has this on their front page (no pictures): BENCHMADE SPECIAL EDITION 940 COMING SOON!

Any idea what this could be??

That would make this a busy year for 940s. We already have the 1801 and 1802, though one of those was an international exclusive
