Just Bought My First Busse! / Question About Stripping

I just bought my first Busse knife. It is an unused FFMB with bama clay coating with tan g-10. It was a great deal from CEIW with a MickyMoto leather sheath included.

Now, I don't care very much for the mud-red coating so I would like to strip it, but since I have never done this before can those of you with experience give me some advice? I would truly appreciate it!

Damn, I am excited!!! ;) Can't wait to get that baby into my hands!

Great score Bro!! I have stripped a few blades and have had good results with aluminum aircraft stripper in a spray can. Make sure you wear gloves and keep it away from your eyes, if the wind is blowing put on some safety glasses. Spray it on, let the coating bubble, wipe it off or scrape it with a piece of cardboard and rinse with water. The stripper I used had no effect on the handle slabs.

PS don't let Mustard Man know you are stripping the Bama Clay!! That seems to be his favorite coating, you may be commiting a sin by stripping it. :D :D :D

Local hardware store....Kleen Strip...apply...wait....clean

When you are done with the coating box it up and send it to Mustard Man.

Yeah... I hear ya. That Bama clay is some fugly stuff! Although, there is apparently one guy on here trying to corner the market. Strip that mistress... she'll love you for it!

I use this stuff... works fantastic. Very fast results. Bought it at home depot.

Awesome, thanks for the info kdstrick! Looks like you and norcalblacktail are on the same page. Snakedoc, I will keep your suggestion in mind, though will try the Kleen Strip and see how that goes.

So Kleen Strip works good? Will it hard the handles or discolor the INFI?

I used it on my NMFBM.

Under the coating, the metal was black, I took it to my belt sander and under the black there were INFI dimples. I ground some more and got the dimples down some, but it's about as much as I want to grind off it at this point. It's not quite satin, it's ghetto satin. I wore out my belts though.

It's a long process, and if I wanted to go full satin, I would need to put a lot more time into it.

Honestly, you could get away with dunking it in the stripper and then some light sanding. I was just bored and wanted a project.

The pictures make it look like it got recurved, it didn't.

I've never used it on G10, but can't imagine that it would be a problem. If it starts smoking... step back. ;)

Best plan is to use a paint brush or something to apply neatly. The INFI will not be discolored or affected in any way. however, you may notice the INFI has a dark color under the coating similar to the MNSFNO I stripped in the pic above. The modern Busse's have that primer looking coating under the crinkle coat.

But beware... it ain't purty under there. There will be more dimples on it than a fat girl's butt in a bikini. :barf:

What grain did you use on your belt sander? Is there an ideal grain to be used in doing this? Thanks!

Yep use the Kleen Strip to strip. I did my on a waki rodent. However I have 1 suggestion, dont buy the spray kind instead purchase the liquid kind I think it works better. Good luck and keep us updated on how things go. :D

I hit it with an 80 grit but my low grit belts were pretty dull, so I went to a 220, and up to 15 microns.

Norcal would know better, he's absolutely great at it, I'm just an idiot with a 30 dollar belt sander who had nothing better to do. Are you wanting to convex it or just strip the coating?

I certainly will! I have a feeling that I am going to be addicted to this...;)

Okay, thanks. I might throw a PM at Norcal for more advice on sanding.

I do want to have it sharpened beyond its factory sharpness, although I am not sure whether or not I should get it convexed or keep the factory grind. What do you suggest? I am planning on chopping wood with it.

Who would you recommend to convex it for me? Theres no way I want to try that on my first Busse. ;)

It's not hard... just practice on some cheap knives first. It's rewarding doing it yourself, especially since sharpening it will be basically the same as convexing it to start with. If you have to send it out, try norcal if he'll take it on. If you're not comfortable using the sander, go the mousepad and sandpaper route.

Thanks for all your help 230grains! I really appreciate it!
