Just Bought My First EDC Knife...How Did I Do?

Definately check out spyderco knives. They are my favorite production company. Sal, the owner is a great guy too. Maybe check out spyderco.com's forums or even the spyderco section on BF.

Anyway good luck! It took me a lot of knives to find the right ones. Everyone is different.

Nice knife. My first purchase about a month ago was a black mini grip 556 partially serrated and a Boker Trance. I did have a Buck 110 that I bought decades ago as well. Anyhow, I now have about five knives and two more on order. I'm looking for another job to pay for this new "habit".

Nice choice on the BM. I traded for one a while back (mini grip 154cm drop point PE), and have EDC'd it every day since then. I find it combos well with a Delica 4 (preferrably waved) in the off hand pocket, and maybe add a SAK or multi tool in there and you are definitely good to go!

Yes, the mini-Grips are a little smaller than they seem to look in the online pix on most web sites. That doesn't seem to stop them from cutting very well, however. I carry an RSK mini for EDC a lot of the time. The only size issue I have is that the handle is about 1/4" too short to be comfortable.

I also carry a Spyderco D4 at work and it seems to be a good bit bigger, even though the actual measurements are very close to the mini-Grip. The handle is longer, however and the blade is wider because of the Spyder hole. That, or an Endura, might be a good choice for you. They are both very tough and very light. And you can get them in ZDP-189 for less than a Military or Para-Military, if you want to try that steel.

I would still keep the Benchmade. It's a good knife to start out with. I started out with Cold Steel tantos in the early 90's and put them through hard use so i do have a little experience with tantos. Axis locks are the best locks IMHO. Plus they're smooth & quick. The problems with tantos is that it doesnt give a consistent cut if you're doing some delicate slicing. They're more suited for aggressive cuts. When you're performing a slice starting from the main edge to the tip of the blade, the slice is not as smooth or uninterrupted when it passes through the secondary point (the one that seperates the main edge from the tip edge). One thing i'll admit is that they're good for scraping off stickers or tint from your car because of its flat edge torwards the tip. IMHO, get another Benchmade Axis lock. Hopefuly a 710 in D2 steel. You wont regret it. And also get a bigger blade. 3.5" - 4" would be nice.
