Just bought...

Interesting. I was told quantum did that also, but when i took my accurist down it was all clean and stuff. I cast on the same sized rods. i prefer the shimano over the revo form wise, build wise and just because i too love shimano. But the abu for some reason has the upper edge in both light baits and castability. I just got the chronarch last year so it's probably not even thoroughly broken in, so i guess you can say "out of the box" the revo casts better.

we just got the new Abu "Villain" series rods at my job. I can't wait to pick one up when I get the cash. at a cool $180, I may have to wait a while or sell a knife or 2... I was listening to "Duel of Fates" by John Williams while I was taking them out of their boxes and bubble wrap. It was life changing!

I just got a Revo SX as well and I freakin love it!

I love the clicking spool tension, a nice little touch.

with proper care anything will last. i take great care of my fishing stuff. I have an 11 year old quantum that works as good as when it was new, if not better!

I second the taking care of things and they will last

I have a few Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs that are probably 20 years old. I could take them out today and fish them and do just fine....but, they are heavy and my low profile bait casters are not. (pflueger trion and a quantum kinetic (I think), both are awesome)

If you have a budget on the rod like you do the reel, get a good one. I high quality rod makes a HUGE difference. I am part of the VT bass club (Hokiebass.com). we are sponsored by a few different people, including JB rods. I have used one (not long unfortunately) and there is a huge difference in how you will fish. If you can get a good rod or better yet, a hand built rod, get it. It is by far one of the best things you can get. I personally use 3 custom rods that my dad built in the late 80s/very early 90s and they are extremely light, sensitive and very well balanced. I can cast a good 10-15 yards farther with these than with a cheap rod.

Also, an awesome rod for the money is AllStars. They are great rods.

by the way, you might see an increase in accuracy if you switch to high quality rods, I know I did.

Matters on how much you use it.
3 of us bought the same Diawa spinning reels when rear drag first came out in the early 80's.
2 of us fished between 3 and 6 days a week.
The third 3 times a summer. His reel is still doing fine AFAIK.
Ours flat wore out in 2 summers... the gear train wore.
Granted they weren't high end reels, but you get the idea.

I also had 2 Ryobi low profile bait casters that replaced the above spinning reel.
They lasted longer, but got all kinds of sloppy in the gear train over time.
One vibrated so much it'd put my hand "to sleep" if I fished spinnerbaits with it more than an hour.

Mid 80's brought along a pair of Abu 5600's for saltwater use.
They are still going strong. Throwing 1-2 oz lures and catching stripers up to 40"

You really do get what you pay for.
I'm meticulous in my care for my gear.
But pot metal and plastic gears will wear with use.
