Just broke the tip on my 110. What to do?

So before I throw it away, please advise on what can be done.

I just got an iPod shuffle. It has a tiny plastic case. I cut all the tape and stuff and then just stuck the tip of my 110 into the plastic to pull the plastic out. I didn't even have to peirce the plastic as it had a slot there already. As I was pulling it out I must have twisted the knife a tad left or right. Then I heard a snap, and the first 1/8" of the tip was snapped off. It was 100% my fault. I just do not know what to do.

While I do not pry with my knives I wouldn't constitute opening small pieces of plastic for an iPod shuffle container as hard work. I will admit that I may have twisted the knife on accident one way or another. I didn't pry at all.

I am not good at sharpening by any means. I was quite upset at first and was going to throw the knife out. It's a nice knife though and I would like to keep it.

Can I send it to someone here to fix the tip? Will Buck fix it? I don't know where to start. The knife has a small picture of Idaho on the blade. It cost me about $35 so I don't want to pay good money to fix it if I can just go buy a new one.

It may sound dumb but just having a broken tip on an otherwise newer knife drives me nuts. I have had it about a year and bought it at Walmart I think.

(see page 2 for update)

Send it to Buck! Dont throw it away!
A busted tip would also drive me nuts.

The Idaho blade was 420HC; they are usually 3 3/4" long...the premium steel blades are 3 5/8" long...If you send it to Buck and request it be sharpened and refinished, it costs $6.95...and you will have a knife just as good as a new one and no shorter than a premium knife...and it is possible that they might change out the blade for you and give you a new one...either way, you're not losing anything...except the $6.95...and postage... :)

I too would send it to Idaho.

In the old days (i.e. before everyone had easy internet access), I never thought to send a knife back to the manufacturer for something like that. When someone brought one to me, I'd file a new point on it, resharpen, and it was done.

Factory service is a better way to go!

I didn't want to send it to Buck because I feel that I may have not been using the tip of the knife in the way that I should have been. I'm ok with admitting that. I'll give them a call in the morning. I couldn't find a place on their site to contact them via email. Thank you everyone.

What is the difference between premium blades? Are those like BG-42, ATS-34, etc?

This web page has all you need to know about Buck's warranty. I'd go ahead and send it in. They will make it right. One word of note. Rather than address it to Buck Knives, just put BK Customer Service. This way your knife will reach its intended destination without being stolen.

Thanks Mike. That is good advice about BK Customer Service. I'll send it in tomorrow I think.

Send it in but dont send any money just yet. It is likely that it will be retipped or rebladed under warranty. In the unlikely event that there is a charge, we will send you an invoice with the finished knife.
Hope this helps.

Wow, are you Joe Houser from Buck? That's pretty amazing. Like I said I was probably using the tip in a way that it shouldn't have been used. I have no problem admitting that. I thank you for your kindness. I will ship it out tomorrow.

:)

I am sure that Joe is overwhelmed by the thought of someone telling him that they had mis-used a knife instead of telling him that the knife had been dropped on a carpeted floor or was being used to whittle soft pine that he had trouble getting his mind around it.

Attitude will always seperate one company from another, how they take care of thier customers can make an A company into A+ company.

It is a real shame that people do that to get free stuff. It would be perfectly fine for him to tell me that it is not covered. I would just seek out someone to sharpen the tip back to a tip again. I'm blown away that he wants me to send it in. I used my Buck 110 where I should have used a small screwdriver and it's 100% my fault.

Thanks Mr. Houser!

I will take a picture tonight and post it if I can do it correctly.

Here is a picture.

It is a very small part of the tip. Do you think I should just try sharpening it until it comes out? Again, I am not very good at sharpening (yet).

Dude, .....just send it in.

They have taken care of me on a couple occasions with my vintage 1995 "one hand opening" folder (my first "real" knife I bought after graduating from college).

Buck rocks, taking care of you is what they do.

Jim
