Just can't enjoy a PM2

So I've owned three PM2s and i love the knife. The blade shape, ergos, and comp lock are all great but the one issue i have is blade play. All three knives I've owned have some sort of side-to-side play that I can't adjust out without compromising the smoothness of opening. Are there any tips for finding that sweet spot that will allow free-fall closing without blade play?

You really just have to keep messing with pivot and the stop pin till you find a sweet spot. There will always be a little bit of play in my experience, but you can minimize it and still have a smooth action. Try rotating your stop pin a bit so that the lock faces a different spot on it. That may help.

This is going to sound weird, but I have one that is perfect with the clip in tip down configuration but if I put the clip for tip up it has some very minor blade play that I can't completely dial out. I don't have a major preference on orientation so I just carry it tip down.

Thats interesting, i dont see how that works but i guess its worth a try

I've tried opening them up, rotating the stop pin, tweaking all the screws and still manage to find some blade play

Use some 5 weight Nano-Oil on the loosened pivot, let it creep into it for a few minutes, then tighten the pivot completely until the blade feels stuck, and then open & close the blade several times under resistance.
Then turn the pivot screw just a hair back until the blade opens smoothly and without play.

I'll give that a try too

I've owned 4 PM 2s at various times. A black standard one, the blue M390, the gray CTS20CP and the green 204P. Not one of them had any play and they all eventually smoothed out beautifully. Wish I had hung on to the sprints as it's become my all time favorite folder. Loved the lock, feel and performance from the start, but it's taken me some time to appreciate the proportions.

Lucky you 😜

When I get a PM 2 with blade play I always start by tightening the body screws and adjusting the pivot to work out the play. When that doesn't work I change tactics and try to get the pivot working smoother so I can crank down the pivot tighter.

I sand the liners around the pivot and polish the washers on my strop then lube it up. This usually gets me 80% of the way there, then the rest of the play can be taken out as the knife smooths out.

I have a few of them and all of the above suggestions should help you. All of mine are perfect.

24 and counting, none have any blade play. Coincidentally, The pivot is tightened all the way down on all 24 of them and they are smooth as butter. If the pivot is loosened even a bit, it all goes to hell. THis has everything to do with the pivot, similar to the Sebenza 21 only one piece rather than 2.

I have typed this many times here...

Get yourself a set of properly sized, properly hardened Torx drivers and some purple or blue Loctite. You should also have a couple of Qtips and some lighter fluid or alcohol to clean the screw threads for best results. You can do the screws clean and apply Loctite to the screws one at a time before you start the process. If you do that, screw them back in loosely (see next step).

Remove the clip and loosen but do not remove the pivot and stop pin screws.

With the stop pin screws loose, adjust the pivot screw to eliminate side to side play and to give you the correct action you want. Ideally, use purple or blue Loctite on the pivot screws.

When that is done, very lightly tighten both stop pin screws with some purple or blue Loctite on the threads. Adjust/tighten to the point where the blade action suits you.

Let the Loctite cure overnight.

Speaking of PM2's, I was wondering today if anyone has compiled a list of all the different variations (LE's & sprints) as well as who sold them and how much the original cost at release was. Has anyone ever come across (or created :) ) something like this?

Looks like a couple members above could do that with ease.:D
