Just Chipped my Brand New NMSFNO... Advice/Suggestions Requested

Hey Everyone,

A couple weeks back I took up the suggestions of numerous posts and bought my first Busse- an NMSFNO with tan micarta and sage blade coating.

I just got the knife today, and chipped it chopping through a small tree branch approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. I was extremely disappointed to see the chip in the edge after examining it after finishing up in the woods. It isn't a huge chip, but easily noticeable to the naked eye and you can catch your fingernail in it as you run it along the edge. I wouldn't have been upset if it was one of my other blades but I guess I just expected more from all the stuff I've heard about INFI on this board.

So does this sound normal to everyone? Maybe I'm overreacting but I'd like to get some advice/suggestions from people more experienced with Busse and INFI steel as to how I should proceed.

Thanks guys.

Weird, a dude I talk to on youtube just told me his NMSFNO chipped too. He wasn't sure if it was a chip or a dent.

Do you have any pics?

I have chopped through a lot so far with my NMSFNO and the edge is impeccable.

To the OP, that's a bummer. Perhaps a picture would better illustrate the situation and help with an assessment.

Yeah I've heard the hype for these knives, seen Noss' destruction tests ect and bought my first Busse based on all of the excellent rep, which in part is about chip resistance. I guess I just feel disappointed that within an hour of getting my knife I chipped it on a small branch. Should I expect this to happen the first time I start batoning it through a thick piece of wood?

I'm wondering if my experience today is out of the ordinary... should this knife have chipped like it did today and should I expect more or what?

Accidents happen ,,,, even in the world of INFI.....very rare though,,,,either re-sharpen it yourself or contact Busse and they'll fix the edge right up

Post a pic of the edge

Pictures or it didn't happen, especially in this case.

Yeah thanks for helpful posts,

No pics at this point, don't have a camera available tonight (loaned it to the gf)
but I'll try to post some tomorrow. It's clearly a chip rather than a dent.

Yeah lets get some pics. IMHO if it really did chip out slicing through a small branch, something must not be right.

Infi is very durable, whats wrong with what I said?

Actually, that's not what you said, nor what you implied. There are more helpful forums available for obviously neglected children such as yourself.

I have found that one some of my Infi blades I need to get a sharpening or two onto the blade before I get the really good performance. Might just be me, but it seems like the factory edge is a little more prone to minor issues like yours.

I've even hit rocks and never had a chip, it is likely a roll. Pics help, if you truly have concerns call the shop.

Enough of the back biting, unless you have something useful to say in regards to the original post back away from the keyboard and take a walk. This is your one and only warning you'll get from me. Keep it on topic or don't bother posting.
