If you want to go permanent, 1/8 inch brass rod and epoxy is a very strong and good looking way to attach handle scales.

I thought about doing that, but since I stripped the coating off I'd like to beable to remove them for maintenance...

If you put enough epoxy on them nothing will get under them.

Very true. As it turned out, I ended up using epoxy since I slipped with a new drill bit and bored a hole thru one of the screw holes.

They feel pretty good in my hand. I left them pretty rough and the canvas micarta is really tacky. They may be a little thick yet I may address that when I counter sink the screw heads.

Looking good! I still remember the first time I counter sunk screws in scales with a hand drill. I went right though the scale. lol
