Hi,I'm just curious to know about your "field knife" preferences(hunting,camping,bushcraft)...about the steel type, grinds & handle materials & why....with or without experience with said knife
Steel type examples-O1,A2,S-7,5160,3V,1095,1075,D2...SS-S30V,154CM,ATS-34,440C,VG-10,AUS-8...to name just a few.

Grinds-hollow,flat,convex...other?

Handle materials-There's so many,so I'm just gonna narrow it to two catagories...Natural or man-made

Thanks in advance for your opinions:)

Take Care,

Long time fan of O1 and A2 for hard use knives, D2 for thinner slicers.
Full convex or flat/convex edge.
Micarta

Just WHERE is all the BLUE food??!!?!?!?!?!?!

as far as grinds go, i am a big fan of scandi and convex. with handle materiels, i prefer natural because when i am outdoors i like to fit in (:

I like 01 and full convex pretty much no matter what.

As to handle material. I really don't care, as long as its a well made handle that is designed for work.

Hi all, Here is what I carry everyday. It has a 5" long
by 1/8" thick by 1 and 1/8" wide and is made out of
0-1 steel flat grind with and is convexed toward the edge.
It has a full tang that is 4.5" long with orange G-10 for the
handle scales. I use my knife from camp to kitchen chores.
Just to day I sliced up french bread and then spread on the
mayo for dried beef sandwiches. and then went out to cut trees
out of a farmers fence line, it always happens Kathy and I will
pack up all our chainsaws and bruchcutters on the ATV then
then there it is a little ceder tree :eek:right there in front of us.
Well if I can not pull it out then out comes my Pathfinder
and one less tree:D Here is a pic of it. and my wifes, heres has
a 4" blade and red G-10 scales for the handle.

To answer your ? on why. I designed it and made it and I like the
blade length of 5" for the all round use and carry I do not carry
a bunch of knives ( my chain saw is weighs enough ) so I am
kind of a one knife carry kinda guy. I do carry a little classic
swiss army knife but I use it for the tweezers and the sissors:D
Also the 5" does better at snap cutting branches than a 4" roughly
bladed knife.

If I did not carry a my Pathfinder then I would a Kelly knife as my
all found carry knife again with a 5" long by 1/8" by 1" wide 0-1 steel
blade with a 4.5" full tang handle with orange G-10 scales for the handle.
Easy to see if set down or dropped. This is a very comfy handle style too
and just a great simple user freindly blade. Here are two versions
of it same blade but different handle shapes and handle scales.

Well that is what my thought are any way. I am looking
forward to seeing what others have to say also.

i like a well done carbon steel because i like a patina and fine carbides for a very highly polished edge.

i like a scandi grind or a convex grind or a flat with convex edge, as long as they have the right angle and are sharp, they will cut fine. the only grind i really don't enjoy is a hollow grind, it just doesn't really work so well for me (not just saying this by heresay, but based on use of several different hollow grinds).

for handle materials, i like natural wood with an oil finish, but synthetics are nice because there is no worry about care or getting wet etc. also, synthetics come in every color under the sun which can be nice sometimes (like that orange G10 that byan posted)

but my EDC knife, my woods knife, my go-to blade for nearly everything that i need a fixed blade for, is my mora #1 by frosts with a natural wood handle and laminated blade.

Bryan,Thanks for the informative answers & the great pics:thumbup:

She's a fine looking knife:thumbup:

I prefer convex for fixed blades but also own and use flat and hollow. Bob Dozier's hollow grind knives are IMO, the best out there. Folders, flat or hollow grinds. The Buck 110 is my all time favorite folder. I haven't found a folder I like better.
Steel types, O1 and A2 are my favorites. Hunting knives and sub 4" fixed blade I also like D2 and 154CM.

Thanks for posting Scott,What about handle materials?Any specific preference?

Did I mention I simply love the T-shirts you sent me?;)

I have been carrying one of Scotts D2 stag handled hunters for some years now and its by far my favorite hunter and it may be one of the few hollow grind knives he's done (Scott you'd have to answer that) but its done everything from splitting pelvis bones and decapitatin small critters to skinning and some bushcraft. I have other knives in D2 in O1 that just cut and cut and keep cutting with little need for edge upkeep. I usually prefer flat ground or convex...but for whatever reason this hollow ground one here does a great job.

barrabas74, I've only done 3 hollow grinds and you have one of them. I can do them but just prefer to be known for convex grinds.
JTR357, glad you like the shirt. My all time favorite handle material is stag but it's cost has gone through the roof. My other favorite is black/green linen micarta. Micarta is without a doubt, the most durable handle material there is. Maroon linen or green linen is my second choice.

In a fixed blade I love 1095. It's incredibly easy to sharpen and takes an amazing edge.

For a folder I like S30V but I gave the one I had away, so obviously I don't use it anymore. Right now my carry is a Wave and a RAT-3. It fits all my needs and covers the contingencies.

As far as handles go, I'm not a huge fan of Micarta. I liked it to begin with but if you don't wash it it gets all oily and slick. In short, natural.

Grinds I'm indifferent on.

Scott,Stag is my favorite too(regarding looks). As far as durability goes,I would agree with you again about the linen micarta, with G10 as a close second.I'm also partial to exotic wood handles, like maple burl, amboyna & olive wood..to name a few.

Don't even get me started on abolone, mother of pearl, black pearl, fossilized mammoth tusk..et al :D;),but I prefer those handle types in a gent folder, rather than a field knife, which is what this thread is about.
