what tools are needed for modifying a knife?

Maybe modify was the wrong word. I just meant reprofiling, switching the pocket clip, ect.

You will need some torx bits to unscrew most pocket clips/screws. I use a husky torx driver set I got from hdepot, it comes with 4 double sided bits, I paid about $6.

As for sharpening, doing it free-hand depends more on skill and less on equipment. If you want a sharpening system, a sharpmaker or lansky system is probably the way to go (on a budget).
