I have decided that I would like to get a SAK to carry with me. I do not know a whole lot about Swiss Army knives. My purpose would be for general carry. The knife should at least include scissors, flat head and phillips head screw drivers, plyers (but not necessary), and possibly a saw blade. I do not need anything high tech and do not want anything much more than 3/4" thick. I briefly looked at the Hercules and Delux Tinker. Compared to some of the other folder knives that I have/want (Benchmade, Emerson, ect) these knives are really inexpensive. Can anyone give me some feedback on these two models or other ones? THanks

I carry a super tinker in my pocket everyday. While it doesn't have the saw, it does have everything else you asked for, plus I think it's an ideal size to tote in the pocket. I recently purchased a hiker on close out at Target - it's the same size and frame as the super tinker except that it has a saw instead of the scissors. I haven't handled a delux tinker, but from looking at pictures of it on the internet, it looks like a winner too. Pretty much with Victorinox, whatever you pick will be a quality knife you can depend on!

HOw thick is your super tinker? I cannot seem to find the thickness of any of the SAK knives online. And, would you know the best place to buy SAK's online? Thanks.

If you don't really need pliers, don't get them on your SAK--not worth the extra bulk (especially if you want to have a thin profile). I agree withTinker or Super Tinker.

I just ordered the Victorinox Locksmith and Soldier. For pliers, if you want something SAK related, get the Swisstool :P

I got mine here

anyone else on suggestions? Can anyone tell me the thickness of the Super Tinker or Delux Tinker? Thanks

I like the Victorinox Cyber Tool line. My fave is the Cyber Tool 41, though this is probably bigger than what you are looking for. In defense of the SAK pliers, I find them to be very useful, not withstanding their small size. Can't beat 'em for removing staples, for example. Of course, if you're going to be using your pliers for more demanding tasks, you might want to look for a good multitool.

I think that the best SAK, tools vs bulk, is the Fieldmaster--and it has all of the tools which you seek.

Good luck,
Allen.

Smudge,

The Deluxe Tinker is 7/8" thick. A regular Tinker is 1/2". I think that the Deluxe is a bit thick for pocket carry. I have a belt pouch for mine. For pocket carry I go with the Tinker or a Recruit which is even smaller. That's just me, though. Some folks are perfectly happy with a SwissChamp (1 1/4") in their pocket. Don't fret over which one to get too much. Whichever one you get, I guarantee that you'll want to buy more :) .

As far as where to buy, I've had great luck with amazon.com. They have low prices and offer free shipping on orders over $25. Wal-Marts usually have a couple SAKs for sale, too. Some sporting goods stores have a good selection but you'll pay more.

Go with the tools you need. You could always get yourself a Swiss champ but if you're not going to use the tools, why bother?

I went for a locksmith. That's all I need.

Has a locking blade, Saw, scissors, and the screw drivers that come on the cap lifters and a small phillips head.
