just did my first knife on a paper wheel....

I'm new to this also, what kind of speed do you sharpen at? I assume just make a pass or two then cool the blade?

I have a set of the razor sharp paper wheels. I think it would be a good idea to go for them becuase if you ever kill a wheel, you can just buy a new wheel. more rouge or grit needed? comes in a 6 dollar package. i think that they will be a lot more helpful in the long run.

I got my paper wheels a little over a year ago and LOVE them! they make sharpening most of the knives that I get a matter of a few minutes the first time, then just a few seconds when I give them a touch up. Big thnx to Richard J as he is the King of the Paper Wheel and a wealth of help and info about them.

I use the paper wheels for sharpening too. If I was rebuilding my set up, here are couple of things I would consider. I would buy a variable speed grinder. These were not as common 15 years ago when I got mine, but I may change it now anyway. I used the smallest profile motor. This gives more room to work around each wheel. I used 1700 instead of 3450 rpm, if not variable speed.

Also, a few years ago, I started using the wheels while running the grinder turned around backwards. This way I sharpen on the top of the wheels and the motor is turning away from me. Before I was holding the knife with the cutting edge down and using the part of the wheel right in front of me. I changed to the backward method because it is easier to see when a burr forms. I just have to be careful when reaching for the power switch on the other side of the grinder.

I opened up my grinder and turned the motor around. :) Now the switch is in the right place.

I did basically the same thing on my buffer and it is working out great. I just removed the base and turned it around. Switch is right out front and the wheels spin away from me.
