Found a pic in one of the latest SMKW catalogs and realized it is the combination I've been looking for. Also picked it up at a great price ($21.99) compared to the other prices I see on the web.

Any other fans of this model?

It's very nice but I like the larger locking blades so that makes me a little more of a Rucksack/Trailmaster/Workchamp kind of guy. Of course, I have several non-locking SAKs and would never turn something as nice as the Fieldmaster away.

I have a Fieldmaster. That and the Explorer are two of my favorite SAKs. I have an older model that I don't know the name of that is basically the Fieldmaster with a file and fishscaler thrown in. I got it for $6! It is just a little too bulky to carry much though, but it rides in my pack from time to time.

I've never seen the Fieldmaster, but like Danceswith knives, I, too, prefer the 111mm locking blades for all-around use. My "pefect" SAK is the Workchamp; it has all the tools I really feel that a survival SAK should have, and along with my fob kit is a pretty good package.

But that's the great thing about SAK's: just about anyone can find a combination that works for him. It sure would be nice if Victorinox did like Gerber and let you build your own SAK, with *exactly* the tools you want. That would be cool.

I like the concept of the locking blades too, but I don't like having to carry the knife in a sheath. IMO, they're just too large for comfortable pocket carry. The Fieldmaster has a nice bag of tricks in a more comfortable size.

Congrats on your new knife. I've owned a Fieldmaster for a few years now, it's a great knife. You'll love it.

DancesWithKnives and V Shrake: I like the Workchamp too. I sold my Rucksack and bought a Workchamp a while back. It's really a complete package, but you sure don't want to carry that big sucker in your pocket. (At least I don't.)

BIG fan of the fieldmaster here!!! I just recently gave my faithfull Tinker to a friend in SOCCOM that was headed to Iraq, (he's still in Basrah), so I set out to find a replacement that offered the best set of tools in a easy EDC size, and the fieldmaster won hands down. I really like this knife alot even over the Tinkers that I have carried for years.

I wear BDU pants all the time, so I don't find the Workchamp too large for pocket carry. But then again, BDU's have HUGE pockets. :~}

I keep my SERE 2000 clipped to my left front pocket (left handed) and have a 4 inch fixed blade that rides in that pocket as well. As such, I don't have enough room for the Workchamp up top, so it goes into my left cargo pocket, along with my mini-kit.
My mini-kit, and SAK with fob kit, fill the cargo pocket up to capacity. I *couldn't* get by wearing jeans; I'd have to get rid of too much "stuff", due to lack of pockets. :~}

Different strokes for different folks. That's what makes the world go round. I would just feel weighted down with all that stuff banging against my legs when I walked. I bought a Victorinox sheath (nylon with velcro closure), and it makes carry a lot more manageable. The only scenario in which I can envision carrying the Workchamp in pocket is if I wanted to impress the ladies. :D

Here's some pics for folks who don't know the models I refer to:

Technically, the Fieldmaster is the Huntsman with a phillips screw driver in place of the corkscrew. Since I don't drink, I've carried a Fieldmaster for a lot of years. I never thought I'd use the scissors, but I've found many uses for them -- from trimming nose hairs, toe and fingernails (while in the field), loose strings on a uniform, and opening MRE's (you get a nice straight cut, just where you want it!).

...and since you can cut a 2X4 in half faster with the saw than by chopping it with your M9 bayonet, I'll never carry another SAK without one.

I have a "Jumpmaster" (a parachutist with a shroud line cutter/gutting blade/seat belt cutter) but find the whole thing too large to carry since I also cary a SOG PowerPlier -- so the Fieldmaster is just the ticket.
