Just dropped $250 for a knife sharpener...

Examples
shapton , chosera , nubatama , atoma , dmt , naniwa , imanishi , JNats. As well as a wide variety strops and sprays.

There is no be-all-end-all stone or set of stones IMO. I have the shaptons and the atomas (complete lineups of both) , as well as nanocloth strops and polycrystalline diamond sprays.

The shaptons are fast cutters that produce a nice mirror finish. The nubatamas are good for clad knives and they are also fast cutters. The atomas are a step up from the DMT's but the DMT's are cheaper. Then theres Jnats.......

Well folks, since ya guys revived my thread I figure I'd better give you an update. The Edge Pro friggin' ROCKS! Had it for almost a month now and after just three knives it seems like I'm getting the hang of it rather well. I have never been able to get an edge this sharp with any other system that I've tried. It does take me a while to acheive this edge, with several hundred passes on the stones (or maybe I'm over-doing it? How many passes per stone do you guys usually do?) but man I finally can get a wicked sharp, hair popping edge! I love it.

Below is the last knife I sharpened (950 Rift) with the second picture trying to show the polished edge as best I could. I have noticed, as other posters mentioned, that the "mirror" finish does wear off real fast.

The first time takes a while because you're establishing a new edge which is usually thinner than the factory one, this requires removing a relatively large amount of steel to bring it to the new angle. Subsequent honings should take far less time :)

That makes sense, thanks!
