Well, to be honest I never was a fan of coatings on blades, and frankly, I got tired of it on the bk7, so I took it off
I didn't do a total overhaul on it, but got most of it off. Its a knife I use quite a bit, and If I made it too pretty, well I wouldn't have used it anymore :D

Here it is at the begining.

Then here it is finished.

So, there ya go, My new and "improved";) BK7

Looks good Fonly. What method did you employ to remove the coating? Did you do any work on polishing the steel once the coating was removed?

Fonly I have some nice cherry wood that would look good as a handle for that knife.

great job by the way.

Just used a hand sander and 60 grit paper, then quickly went over it with 1500 grit, I skipped the step in the middle for the hell of it, mainly just wanted it done, Im sick and wanted to get down

I am going to SEARS now to get a hand sander so I can beat up my old BK9

Nice job FONLY-whats next? Handles?

Yup, she looks good naked.;) If you ever get tired of it, I'll send some pesos your way.

You bet.:D Doing anything with the grips? I was all lined up to get my Brute grips sandblasted to remove the slippery surface, until I saw how thin the grips were. I put it back together and just wound some black cloth hockey tape on it. Feels better this way. Other than that, all I've done is take an axe file and sharpen the beveled swedge on top.

I might take that Idea and sharpen the swedge, I actually never thought about doing that.

how about this handle modification!? Makes it very ergonomic and grippy. Very easy to make by just using sand paper and a metal-cutting-saw. It’s a user all-the-way so the saw job is done poorly but effective.

nice job of removing the coating btw!!!

you can also fill the handles with JB weld and then grind them down a little. I have heard people do this. Or call Bill Siegle and can make some micarta for it

I dont find the handles bother me much, I wear leather gloves and haven't had problems so.

Why remove the coating if its a user? What difference does it make other than making it more prone to rust.

At a loss, shrugs,

Skam

I did the same thing with my BK-5, except I used simple paint stripper and a putty knife for most of it. had my handles sand blasted for a more stable grip. Made it much better, even though I am still comptemplating some ironwood for the handle.

I've never been a big fan of rough coatings like that. Especially on a knife you'd like to put a high convex edge on. (the reason I removed mine)

very nice looking!

I removed because I liked it and take care of my knives, I dont worry about them rusting

I forgot though, I did leave most of the coating under-neath the handles. Because I cant get under there all the time to clean it.
