How many here have been so stupid as to place themselves in this situation?

This was all as a result of his own carelessness.

If your talking about not telling anyone excactly where they are going for a day hike in an area they frequent very often, I am willing to bet quite a few..

I am one of them, and yes I know it was stupid.

Again we all make mistakes, it is how we learn from them that defines us. This guy now has a permanent reminder of his mistake.

In the movie they put a serious emphasis on his stupid mistakes, they did not glorify them.

I do not disagree with you, I just can not condemn someone for a mistake they have made and owned up to.

I think his story should be an example to all of us.Yes he was a bit stupid doing what he did, but he was confident as a climber. It is just as likely he were just crushed and killed instantly. Any of us have potential of a disaster when we are out regardless of gear and skill. Sometimes stuff happens and how you deal with that shows your skills. Its not just how many toys you bring with you.

The difference here is that a lot of the critics are simply "arm chairing" this situation. I would ask those who say he is stupid for being in this situation in the first place how many times they actually go out in the woods or wherever. However, I won't because I know that nothing good, or honest, will come of it.
