Bryan..those are gonna be awsome..that top model would be Bad if it had a little more of a tip....kinda like a hudsonbay style...

Great movie! Limiting the selection to production/semi-production manufacture which can be relatively easy to acquire by the production crew. Considering the fact that he'd most likely be influenced by the modern tacti-cool designs and ones made States side. If I was the prop guy on the set... I'd lay these in front of him to choose.

I think Bryan is pretty darn close as to what Mr. Johnson would pick! I'm sitting here looking at the December, 2002 issue of "Knives Illustrated" which happens to have some photos of the real John Johnston's ("Jeremiah Johnson's") Bowie knife. Bryan's rendition is amazing similar to it!

Just a fun post, if Jeremiah johnson had his pick of the knives available today what do you think he'd pick.
It could be a production or custom, let's hear what you think would fit with his Mountain Man lifestyle !!!

Well........... in his time frame he coveted that .50 cal Hawken which he deemed a high end tool and superior to his own primary weapon. Whatever knife, probably small skinner and large fighter, he picked, would eventualy be practical working higher end like a Busse. He would likely come in with common man tools like a Becker. But would trade up to Busse when the opportunity arose.

actually the Jim Thorpe bowie from Randall is supposed to be the modern knife ,The book "Crow Killer" was about Thorpe and this is where the story of Jerimiah Johnson came from its a great knife.

raymond thorpe sorry
The book "Crow Killer:The Story of Liver Eating Johnson" was written BY James W. Thorp and Robert Bunker, and is about John "Liver Eating" Johnson, elements of Johnson's life, and a fictional book "Mountain Man" by Vardis Fisher, were blended to create the film character "Jeremiah Johnson".

As for a modern "Jeremiah Johnson", I'd vote for that big Gossman Tusker above also!

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I think Jeremiah Johnson would enjoy the various blades from ML Knives....especially this 10" camp knife:

Since he was a fictional charactor, I'm thinking he would make do with any fictional knife the prop manager came up with. Being caught with the grizz lured into the cabin by BCCL, I would suppose that would be a substantial sticker. I like a lot of them I see here so far. Dang. I need to watch that movie again. One of Redford's best. And Will Geer was good in it too.
