Don't want to call the wife and tell her at work, will wait till she get's home. Kind of blind sided me. Been working here for 22 years. The good news is that I'm a healthy 50 year old guy with little debt. Don't need sympathy, although some smoke might be in order!:) Just had to tell somebody. I know a lot of you guys have been through the same thing. First time I've ever lost a job, so I've been extremely fortunate. With any luck I'll be one of the last to go as I'm in charge of maintenance and will have to move everything out... I guess. May be a blessing in disguise, as the fellow who bought our plant in Nov. 2000 is a megalomaniac. More good news. My bilton will probably arrive tomorrow! Thanks for letting me vent.
See ya,

Steve

ferguson,
sorry to hear the not so good news...
I've have always lived under the impression that "things
happen for a reason". While there is certainly not a
positive outlook initially, you must think positive,
keep your head up high, and better opportunities will come.
As long as your healthy, it's a blessing in itself...
I'll send A white cloud of smoke down your way.
hang in there

You got smoke, linthead. The small-to-medium garment plants in the Carolinas and the rest of the rest of the South are a playground for speculators, big corporations looking for a tax balance...and megalomaniacs. The outfit I retired from is now in its sixth ownership since I retired, but hasn't ever closed. They buy it, send in their accountants and ops "experts", build it up on paper and pass it off to the next one. In the process, a plant that originally produced high quality and paid the owners a good return has become more and more shoddy, and the "labor pool" has moved out about 50 miles, because the locals no longer consider it a good place to work. Maybe yours was fortunate, getting it "quick and merciful".

You can have my job. All you need is the ability to take verbal abuse. :)

I've developed that skill to mastery during the past 3 years!:D Thanks Bruise.

I think I know how you feel Steve. I saw men put their 20 to 30 years in the steel mills only to have them close and they lost their retirement and hospitalization. It isn't right. The corporate exectitives got 100 k bonus.:grumpy:

Heck even the military keeps screwing the men after their 20 are served!

Time to look into starting your own business.:D

Damn!!!!:( I always hate to hear of such doings, but it seems there are more and more these days.
Best of luck Steve!!!! Hope you're like my nephew and find something better with a much better salary!!!!:D

First time I've ever lost a job

You didn't lose the job, it left. BIG difference.

You know the drill: the whole steps of loss,etc....

Mostly it seems to be keeping things in perspective, taking responsibility for those thing for which you are truly responsible(and not the closing of the entire plant), and allowing those close to you to know how you really feel--don't bottle it up.

If the good will of the people you have here is an indicator, you will do just fine, friend.:)

Remember, what looks like a curse today can easily become tomorrow's blessing.

Years ago when the airplane business was downsizing I had an engineer buddy who got laid off at Convair. He opened a gas station and later said it was the best thing that ever happened to him and wished it had happened sooner.

they've closed about every manufacturing plant you can close in Indiana, many of my friend outta work, and my co went outt biz in 2002, then the next co I worked for went outta biz in 2003. Heluva enconomy for all fields, manufactu and tech.

they say Change is good. They also say Ya nver know a good thing until it is gone.

Good luck on your job search.

Keith

I didn't know how to weigh in on this. It brings back memories of my own. Lots of us have been thrown out by change or simple corporate greed or in-house politics. The days where a guy could work for a company his entire life have mostly disapeared. I'm sorry, Ferg.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm still a little numb, or just too dumb to be real upset. I'll land on my feet ok.

Damn Steve, 22 yrs? Best I can come to even imagining it is when I came home from 8 1/2 months in the desert during Desert Storm to have my wife of nine years tell me she couldn't hack it anymore and wanted a divorce. You're taking it pretty calm, but I'm telling you right here buddy, it's okay to be pissed, because sometimes life just plain sucks through no fault of our own. The weak wring their hands and mope, the strong find a way to climb out of the ditch. You're one of the strong ones so I ain't worried about you, but I still feel for you bro.
