I posted this knife over in Traditionals. Some of you may not make it over there often.

A nice Ulster with well worn bone handles that I have started to EDC.

Waynorth has already shared one of his old dogs with us in that thread.

Anybody else want to share here?

Glenn

Sure,I'll add one I posted on Levine's forum a while back.Still haven't narrowed a time frame on it.
It's not as well-worn or have as nice a color as yours,Glenn.
I think that this what is referred to as a "teardrop jack".

The main blade looks like it's about 1/16" shorter than new and has the tang stamp - Hammer, with the logo below. The opposite side has "247" centered in the tang.
The pen blade has :
New York
Knife Co.
Walden
on the tang and nothing on the pile side.

What strikes me is that for a knife that was made before 1931,this has stronger springs and half-stops than any new Schrade I have.It really "walks n' talks!
The clip blade appears to have been re-tipped but I thought it was worth $12.00.

LT, have you contacted BRL? You might have more influence with him than I or others would. He does work in the knife law related fields, and trys to stay on top of legislative issues. Just a suggestion.

A steal at 12 bucks! A dogleg, candle-end jack!

Here is an old Case XX stockman w/leather punch that is in my EDC rotation.
$5 at a pawn shop. Still a lot of life in the old knife.

Dale

Nice one Dale!

But if you can still see the jigging, it isn't broken in yet. :D

I've got a Case pattern that I'll have to dig out and photo. Someone sure got their money's worth on one of the blades.

Glenn

Here is a Hammer brand that seems to fit this thread it has a bit of pocket ware. LT

Nothing like that old red bone! It has yet to be matched in modern knives! Could be 50 years old, could go another 50!!

LT,
Does it have a model number?
I have one of Voyles' books in which he shows a lot of NYKC models and their numbers. Most of them are 4 digit with a few 3 digit.
BRL indicated that he wasn't familiar with their model numbers and whether the 3 digit was earlier than the 4 digit ones.
NYKC's are hard to find in this area.

LT,
The pattern numbers aren't dated in the book, the IBCA Price Guide to Antique Knives - 2nd Edition - J.Bruce Voyles.
The numbers range from single digits up to the 4900's,with one exception shown as a 40436 Congress.
There isn't any info on the numbering system.
Your 2229 is listed and described as a "Swell End Jack - bone- 3 & 5/8".
The book was dated 1995,so the value estimates are out of date.
I also collect steel traps and I learned long ago that price guides are not much use in assessing an item's value.
Since New York Knife Co. closed it's doors in 1931,I'd say that your estimate of when it was made is good.
I'm also old enough to know I'm not qualified to argue with or second-guess the top Schrade expert in the world.I meant that sincerely.
And appreciatively!

Frankly I knew where you were going on this and have that book ( which you reminded me of on another occasion ) unless I am totally blitzing. Thankyou for the nice words however they are your words not mine. LT

Hey Rich, that is a "swell" end jack! :D

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week. try the veal!

Glenn

Here is that Case that I mentioned. It's a shame, cause the rest of the knife is in such great shape. The bone is great. The second blade is used, but not too bad. It would make a good project knife...

Glenn,
I have a case like yours, i'll put in a picture here, Not worn as yours. If you'd be interested in parting with yours let me know, I might be able to find a good clip blade for it, I really like that pattern of knife, since it's like an overgrown muskrat ;)
