Just getting into knives

I've always carried a knife with me since high school, but I never had money for it to be a nice one. As I grow older it's fun to be able to purchase different knives and just hold onto them.

This forum (as a lurker) has opened my eyes to a lot of brands and I just wanted to say that I'm glad I found Spyderco. Boy do they really work nice for the price. I've been using an endura 4 in my toolbox for the last three months now and it's just fantastic. I think I'm going to have to sharpen it here soon though and I'm not looking forward to that. I've never sharpened a VG10 blade before... we'll see how it goes.

Vg10 is great stuff. Very user friendly. I had a knife in it, just recently bought one in N690, which is similar. Love these two steels, they get very sharp, and they are not as picky as high carbide steels. I love those a lot, but some can be touchy. Good luck on the sharpening, hope it goes smoothly

I would not worry about sharpening VG-10. One reason it is so loved is that it is not that hard to sharpen yet holds a good edge. A good sharpening system can take a lot of the effort out of the task, too.

Same here on the just getting into! Asked the wife for a spyderco sharpmaker and a strop for Christmas so I can start sharpening my knives. Hoping to pick up a spyderco knife too. Never had one.

VG10 is excellent, not hard to sharpen, and will get extremely sharp.

If you don't already have sharpeners, the Spyderco Sharpmaker would be an good choice.

Agreed. VG-10 remains one of my favorite knife steels. Easy to sharpen and resharpen. Gets scary sharp with little effort. Get the Sharpmaker and use it to keep the knife sharp. It's always easier to keep a knife sharp than to let it get dull and then get it sharp again.

Welcome to the forums / addiction!

I'm seconding the suggestion that you purchase a Spyderco sharpmaker. Wonderfully reliable. Don't worry too much about VG-10, it's very pleasant to sharpen.

I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker and a leather strop (old belt with some buffing compound rubbed into it) with my Delica in VG-10. Every easy to sharpen and maintain it using that combo.

I was going to say to the OP that  sharpening is the "BeforePlay" of knives (well I didn't type what I mean but you get the idea).
I say (and I DO) : Enjoy sharpening. It can be very enjoyable and satisfying (though like most things in life it takes some practice and the RIGHT equipment. And unlike some things in life :D you can buy the equipment that you need or if you have good connections with Santa . . . well . . . all the better.

What I am posting now though is . . . ha, ha, ha . . . I too am waiting until Xmas to sharpen. Not that I don't have what I need to get 'em stupid sharp but I am looking forward to maybe, if I'm good (yah right :grumpy:) maybe :o I will have an Edge Pro Apex under the tree.
And so
I am letting all my user knives get on the dull side. My poor CS Holdout was having trouble slitting plastic wrap off a new piece of hardware I was unpacking the other day while someone looked on. I was so embarrassed for it (and for my self) / we just don't roll like that . . . until now.

It will be fun though because I will have a pile of knives ;) to get down with if and when the time of the "Great Arrival".

The only thing(s) I am sharpening right now is my Gerber EAB light(s) and my two Stanley 10-109 (one single bevel the other double bevel) (after all  there is a limit to what a person can do without).

Do they still make these 10-109 s ? I may start a thread just on those.
Razor sharp, one hand opening, large ergonomic handle for serious purchase during battle . . . sounds like just the kind of knife we all "need" and love.

So the VG10 sharpened up pretty nice. I'm not good at sharpening by any means. I'm self taught, which probably means I have some bad habits. I got it to the point where it's shaving hair. For my work knife, that's plenty sharp. It'll do a good job opening all the equipment when the time comes.

Honestly, that's sharp enough for pretty much everything people do with pocket knives. If you can get it to that point you're pretty much good to go, though it is sometimes fun to take a knife to a really screaming sharp edge and do all the hair whittling and cutting S shapes in receipt paper tricks.

VG-10 is very nice, rust resistant, holds a good edge and can be mantained easily...

I would recommend a Fallkniven DC4 for free hand sharpening or a system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker for a easier sharpening...in this case don't forget to buy the ultra fine stone (the one with the red triangle)...it will buff the edge incredibly!
However, I can avoid re-sharpening my VG-10 Endura and Delica 4 for very long time just with regular stropping after every "pretty serious" use (small pieces of wood, cardboard, wires)...just my .02

I do have the sharpmaker. I've been trying to sharpen the Endura freehand because the angle on the blade looks different than 30 or 40 degree like the Sharpmaker uses. I guess this is the confusing part for me (trying to figure out what angle to sharpen to).

Also... As far as what I have available currently at my house for sharpening

Sharpmaker with coarse, fine and ultra fine.
DMT stones in ultra coarse, coarse, fine and ultra fine
Two sided strop. One side with compound (ABSOLUTELY terrible at stropping)
