OK, i just got my BM 42 in the mail today! I have been wanting one since the begining of this year!
After the initial joy of recieving it wore off... i started to notice some defects...
First, on the bite handle on the inside edge (where the blade fits between when closed) looks like some one took a grinder to! not a smooth grind (like on the inside of the safe handle)... but quite messy.
Second, the safe handle on the inside edge, near the piviot pin, it looks like it has been ground wider for the blade and washers to fit better.
Third, the skelaton holes in the handles. Four of them are some what jagged and unfinnished looking on the inside.
Fourth, On the outside of the handles there are some scratches going lenghtwise... like four little groups of scratches on each handle just on one side of the knife.
And the last thing is that the safe handle doesn't piviot smoothly at all when on it's side with the "Benchmade USA" side of the blade facing up. It is really somewhat stiff. The bite handle far and away moves much better than the safe hadle in any possition. There is enough play in the handle too... so i don't know what the deal is...

Let me know if these things are common... or if i should just send the knife back...

Thanks for your time,
Shrubba

That about describes mine. But it sure is smooth to flip and ultra durable/light.

Yep, you just about summed up my knife. At first I didn't see these things, but under close expection I saw this. Frankly, I can't stand spending $120 and up on a knife that a cheap Chinese manufacturer can better produce. Until BM ups their QC, I doubt i'll be buying another for a while.

Sounds to me that your knife is in a rather ruff condition. The titanium handles are a casting and are probaly finished on a belt type sander. My 42 shows none of the flaws that you mentioned. I would suggest you send the knife back to Benchmade. I'm sure they would correct the flaws, maybe replace the handles. Give them a chance befor you give up on them.

I'm still pretty torqued about them not even grinding their swedges right. (went through 6 of Bm 42s, and 5 Mel Pardue double edges, and still couldn't find one with a correctly ground swedge) :mad

The defects mentioned seem to be pretty common. I sure hope the one I ordered doesn't have them. I'd be more than a little upset.

Yeah sadly that is very normal.. I suggest you send it back to angie with a polite rant and she'll tae care of you fine.. sinceit is a production balisong it'll get back to you in say 2 weeks. But mine was onlya latch problem. I know I coudnt eat or sleep unti lI sent mine out cause it pissed the f out of me.

Kind of blows away the myth that they did away with the really great BaliSong line because their tooling was worn out, huh?

They need to bring them back. And fix this problem as well.

New 42 is a great concept, they need to clean it up.

I hear you Sniperboy. Tool or no tool, flipping or no flipping, it would bug the hell out of me to know I paid top $ for a defective knife. Unless the damage was caused by myself, I wouldn't be able to sleep either till I got a refurbished one!

Would Benchmade accept/repair/resend their 42's from customers in California? :|
