Impressive is all I can say in this first hour of ownership. ...BIG too.

I dunno what to do with this thing! It's a big 'ol chink of CPM S90V!!! I don't even like sharpening S30V! I reckon that Sal & Co. do a little softer than others with this material?? I know that I like my Spydie S30V better than any other makers HT... Just enough easier to sharpen than others I have/have had.

It's a good thing I'm 6'5", or I'm not sure if I could pull off carrying such a beast! I like it! I've been all over the place with knives this past year... I still would put the SnG above this as a "grail," but for the money, this knife seems impossible to beat. I really like the finish on the CF... simple and not flashy. The liner is definitely one of the best I've seen.

It is very much a "working man's" knife... where function comes first. I like that, and I don't. The knife is perfect for its "all business" intentions, and it is even beautiful. The lines are tastefully done, not too unlike, say, the Caly III or UK Pen Knife.

The one critique I have that, to me (IMO), is screaming for a makeover is the clip. I realize that the main intention of this design is strength and pivot access, but I feel it could have been done a lot better. To me, a clip on a knife is like a sheath with a Fixed Blade. I want the same thing out of both of them.. functional, simple, and unobtrusive. There are two things that make up for the big 'ol triangular tri-screwed eyesore, and that is the silver screws, and their benefit of grip for out-of-pocket deployment. The screws are gonna be the first thing to lose the black coating, and I'm happy to see that they were left the way they will be very soon anyway... I DO like the amount of room left by this clip to grab the knife out of pocket/IWB/where its clipped. The top screw does offer a little knob of traction for the thumb/finger to grab, ensuring a definite/safe deployment. I do like that it is tip down. I am usually very active, and I like to see the tip down so that it is less likely to open and slice the 'ol cheek-a-roo when IWB.. which is where this knife is most likely to ride.

That said, I'd still like to see a clip that incorporates the Pivot screw with either a bent tab (preferred), or ONE other (smaller) screw to keep it from pivoting. I realize that it cannot be recessed due to the recessed liner. Just using countersunk screws would be nice, but I'm sure they would not be as robust. I don't know why I'm so anal retentive about the clip... You have to admit, that compared to the barrel screw on the Native, or the wire clip on some spydies, there is something to be desired. Well... I reckon, I'll carry this big guy and ponder...

To sum it up... GREAT job, Spyderco. This knife is fantastic.

S90V is a amazing steel but its not what I would call easy to sharpen with a RC of 65.

Your gonna have to invest in a diamond hone. I picked up a falkniven DC$ combo hone, fine diamond on one side, ultrafine ceramic on the other. But then I get all my blades with plain edges.

Not only is the RC hardness way up there, the carbide volume is outrageous as well. Diamonds are a very good idea for this steel.

Don't worry about the size. In a week, it will be perfectly normal and a Delica will feel like a penknife. ;)

Congrats on your new knife. I am saving up for one myself. The best thing to do with a hard to sharpen steel it to not let it get dull. Regular touch up's...

I have one - it's a GREAT knife. I think it carries small for its size. Great choice ;)

The S90 is more like RC58-60. The ZDP is currently about the hardest steel spyderco puts out at about RC64-65. It's the large amount of vanadium carbides that make it ( S90V) more difficult to sharpen. Not a problem for diamond sharpeners though.

I've read the H1 SE blades get pretty high with the work hardening from the serration process.

Mule #2 is RC 63-64 which puts it up there too.

I reckon I'm in for a "learning experience." I may just have to have Golden touch this one up for now when it needs it... I dunno if I want to spend $50 to upgrade my Sharpmaker... or just save up for an Edge Pro Apex... I'd like to get the Apex sooner or later anyway.

I'm only 5'6" and feel right at home carrying the Military until I pull it out and the sheeple freak on me:eek:! I don't really care and I'm going to carry it any way:foot:. It also fits my smaller medium size hand very well.

I asked sal and he said 65 on the S90V millie and the mule 2 tested a 62-63.

Can you recall where this was? That's too high a number for S90V. If he said it, he was thinking of a different knife.

I'll bet you a brand new byrd the S90V millie isn't RC65. :) Winner drop shipped from New Graham and paid for by the loser. Accept? Joe

Yep, that's the thread I thought you were referring too. I still, like my post in that thread believe that he was referring to S125V.

RC65 is too high for S90V. Do you want to accept the wager I offered? Any Byrd chosen by the winner, to be paid for by the loser and drop shipped from New Graham directly to the winners house. Official winner determined by official response from Spyderco, hopefully Sal or Kristi. (proof being not that thread you posted, that's what is in question)

BTW knifenut1013, I used to live close to Flint, up in the thumb area in Lapeer co. I love Michigan, just couldn't find work. I'd guess around 25% of my graduating class left the area back then. Regards, Joe

Also, if this is against the rules, Sorry.

Knifenut, I put the question thread up. I apologize if I've put you on the spot, or embarassed you in any way. This whole thing has kind of been toungue in cheek ( but I still will pay if i lose) :) Joe

I think he would have corrected him self if he posted a wrong RC, he did quote me so I don't think he was refering to a different steel.

No offence taken, I accept your bet.

Good deal knifenut. I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way. We will all learn something hopefully. Crucible lists "aim" hardness as betweenRC 56-59 for S90V. That doesn't mean Spyderco didn't run it at RC65. The ZDP gets that hard.

RC65 is the "aim" hardness for S125V for knife type uses. It's a pretty high hardness for any steel to maintain without getting brittle. The metallurgists have made some really amazing things especially in the last few decades.

S110V is a spin off from S90V that is just coming out. It should get higher working RC's than S90V, but still be a bit short of S125V.

I was just rereading an old thread where sal stated about S125V that

CPM-125V is not looking good

In the last test run, the grinding didn't go well. There was more wheel wear than steel removal.

We're making a few by hand, and we're working on forumualting a new wheel chemistry. So it will take a while, if at all possible.

I thought phil wilson ran S90V around 65.
