Just got a S&M File & Wire Sway Belly Trapper

A quick question............Where did you buy it?

I see you are from Utah.

You did not happen to buy that one at Cuttlery Corner in Orem did you????

The owner at Cuttlery Corner had a pretty big collection he was selling, and he had a few File and Wire I got to play with over the Christmas holiday. I almost bought a F&W Toothpick, and a Sow Belly Trapper he had on hand.

It that is where you picked that one up, I bet it had my grubby prints all over it!

That would be the place, same knife, yep lots of people had left prints... :) I live a bit north of there and run by on occasion. All of the knives in that display were from the same collection, and I have been eyeing them over for a while now. I have gotten to know the owner a little and they are good people.

I think 420ss blade steel since no label for ATS

As far as the steel type goes, I have the F&W Series toothpick (not the newer Big Daddy, but the one that came out a few years ago) and it is ATS34, but there is no indication on the blade one way or the other, so no label on yours doesn't necessarily mean that it's not ATS34. I really like my toothpick and I sure like that one you've got. Nice score!

Zuchus: thanks for the info, I got around to putting a good edge on it last night, it wasn't too terribly hard, so I'm still not sure what steel it is. Seems like it will be able to hold the edge for a while, we will see. Doesn't really matter too much for my uses though. I carry a small fixed blade in D2 for harder tasks.

I really like that toothpick. Beautiful.

Bigfattyt: it's neat that you come to their shop when your in town. You are right about the girls, they have some really awesome collections. On occasion I have seen portions of the owners collection as well, and they are amazing. Good family and raising the kids right

Nice pick there Zuchus!
That is the medium toothpick from the 3rd Series, 5th Edition, made in 2006 and if you turn it over to the pile side & read the blade etch (if it hasn't wore off) it states, Year made, model # & ATS-34.
Once again I'm just quoting what David Krauss said in his book American Pocketknives, "The early File & Wire Series knives were produced in both 420HC & Ats-34"
I'm just taking his word for it I really have no way of telling which steel it is except for what I've read & the blade etch.

Dave -

Thanks for the info. The blade etch is long gone on mine (I didn't care for the polished finished - it made the knife look like a letter opener to me so I scotch-brited it into a satin finish) but now that you mention it I do recall it saying ATS34 on the etch.
