Thanks a lot for your comments, I'm interested in one of those but would like to hear some more opinions about the sharpness out of the box, I hate it when they are not shaving sharp too..

akiramasamune,
Glad to hear of your purchase of a HAK! They really are a very useful "little" knife! They are one of the best deep cover knives out there in my opinion. Add the fact that you can use your hand and not loose any dexterity with the knife in your hand and you have a truely great "little" knife!

Feel free to send me your knife and I will ship it back to you at my expense after sharpening! I sharpened many of the utility HAK's but not all of them. I don't know if this is one that I sharpened or not, but I will take care of you either way!

PM me if you would like to take me up on this.

Tom

I'm surprised that your UHAK did not arrive shaving sharp. Mine arrived with a perfectly satisfactory edge. However, you can't expect a HAK to be as sharp or cut as well as a regular knife, since the edge is intentionally left a little thick to accomodate its primary purpose as a last-ditch, self defense weapon (hence, the lifesaver).

Front Sight Rocks. I love my UHAK. Now pay attention ... I don't get all warm and fuzzy about stuff too often.

If you send it to Mr. Krein I have to doubt that it will be great when you get it back.
Mine came sharp enough. So sharp I ended up with a stitch and a buddy wrap. I was glad to have the Lifesaver, the band aid didn't get it done, and the nurse was cute as a button.

iwant to get an HAK but i hear that the wait for them is bad if you dont get one that is for sell.. what is the quality of the HAK knife?

Good to great steels with a Paul Bos heat treat. I may be biased because I have a hand in making some of these happen, but I think they are very nice!

Lets hear what some of you guys/gals with HAK's think....

I unfortunately only have one HAK, but can vouch that they are awesome. The concept is simply brilliant and although I can't comment on the fit/finish of the utility HAKs, I can say that the custom ones are surprisingly fantastic. I say surprisingly in that I've sharpened my HAK a few times now (razor sharp on delivery though!) and found that it is tricky to sharpen due to it being so small. I just have no idea how grindmasters like Tom K etc manage to put such a wicked grind on them!

My advice would be to save up some money for a custom now. There is just so much to choose from!

Cheers,

Greg

I have had 2 UHak's and 2 custom Striders. all were sharp! I am sorry to hear that and am sure it was an honest mistake error.

Tom Krein awesome gesture on your part too!

Amazing in fact~

i'm thinking about picking up a HAK, probably a strider one, i like the Ti version with the flaming on it, seems like a good edc FB to me.

Got to handle some at BLADE and I liked them & the concept. Just put in a order for a cord-wrapped utility HAK. If I like the way it feels I can see me ordering a Custom Titanium Model later.

Planned use for my HAK is neck carry while I run. I generally run around my neighborhood late at night and it is the only time I am without a knife. Looking to correct that.

I have a HAK Strider made Sting model that came face shaving sharp.
With a Sharpmaker edge maintenance takes about 30 seconds.
Just use the flat sides of the Sharpmaker rods at the very tip because the pointed sides will "round off" the tips.

akiramasamune - I had considered getting a Spyderco Salt knife because of the rust proof H-1 steel. I just think I would rather have a fixed blade vs a folder if SHTF 3 miles into a run and I am tired.

I must confess I find it funny that they call this blade shape 'utility' ;)
Anyway, the time is coming for me to pick up one (and another one for my bride)

Go to the hardware store and look at a "Utility Knife"....then you will understand. The blades are the same. Seems like a good idea if you ever have to use it and wind up in court!!

I have two custom HAKs: a Ken Brock Straight & a Strider NF (really a semi-custom Straight, for those unfamiliar). I think theyre both tremendous small blades and a great custom knife value (at about $140-$150 if I remember correctly). Both of mine came extremely sharp and still are, despite some moderate use.

I think I'm sold more on the Straight design versus some of the more exotic blade shapes (claw, hybrid, curvy). Ease of sharpening is a big thing with me, as well as having a more standard-looking & socially acceptable blade shape. Exotic blade shapes can lead to trouble in my opinion.

No complaints quality control-wise on mine (but they're custom/semi-custom). I'm always on the lookout for innovative designs in the knife world and I really think that FrontSight hit a homerun with this concept. I gotta say that I highly recommend the custom HAKs (I have never purchased or handled one of the UHAKs).

I've also been eyeballing those Midnight HAKs with the DLC finish by Tom Krein...

Hope this helps,

I understand why they call it 'utility', it sounds PC :) But if Michael Janich and Mike Snody are right with the Ronin/Yojimbo (and I believe they are), then it is the ideal shape for SD :)
But I don't wanna wonder off, sorry.
